 Male members of the Brahmin community observed the annual Avani Avittam ritual at the Anandawalleswram temple Kollam on Saturday,13th August,2011. The changing of the sacred thread was held on the banks of the temple pond.
  The Avani Avittam ritual primarily involves the changing of the sacred thread (Poonool) and is observed on the full noon day of the Sravana month in the Hindu Calender or the Tamil Month of Avani. Avittam is one of the 27 stars and falls on this day. The changing of the 27 stars and fells on this day, The changing of the 27 stars and falls on this day. The  changing of the sacred thread symbolises a new beginning and renewal of the Brahmins pledge to maintain their edic duties to society. The ceremony is  in the nature of penance for the lapes that may have occurred during the year which has gone by.Aso known as Upakarma or the beginning, the day reminds the Brahmin community of the spiritual significance of the sacred thread. They offer libations of water to their ancestors and great secrs ( rishies)

Devotees believe that it is on this day that Lord Hayagriva,  an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, brought back the Vedas that were stolen by the demons to Lord Brahma. The ritual symbolises the permission to study the vedas. the poonool has three threads that represent the goddesses Gayatri(Mind) Saraswati (word) and Savithri (deed). The chanting of Gayatri mantra is one of the most important aspects of the Avani Avittom ritual.
