KAACHIL (YAM) ENTERED LIMCA BOOK OF RECORDS

KAACHIL (YAM) ENTERED LIMCA BOOK OF RECORDS

A Yam(Kaachil) weighing 275 kg,harvested by a farmer in the Thiruvananthapuram city, has made it to 2011 Limca book of Records. The Yam harvested by R. Raveendran of Ulloor in his homestead farmer has been listed by the Limca Book as the heaviest of its kind in 2010.
The entry given bolow a picture of the jumbo yam reads: In 2010, R. Ravvendran of Ulloor thiruvananthapuram,Kerala ,harvested an unusally big African yam (
diocorea rotundata) locally known as " Kaachil" which weights 275 kg. While the normal weight of the crop is up to 25 kg, Raveendran has a history of producing giant yams organically" it took four labourers and as many days to yank out the giant of a tuber from Mr Raveendran's plot. The giant yam soon grabbed the attention of not only his neighborhood but the entire city.
The delighted farmer was complimented by scientists from central Tuber Research Institute (CTCRI) who themselves were taken  aback by the size of the tuber, the yam was exhibited on the CTCRI campus before it was cut up in to small pieces and sold as planting material. Mr Raveendran had used the sreesubhra variety released by the CTCRI. The plant was raised organically and it took only  10 months to mature. Mr Raveendran regularly consulted scientists at the crop production division of the CTCRI and followed their directions. Mr Raveendran used only bio-fertilizes and pesticides
