BY CYCLE, BY CHOICE

                                BY CYCLE,BY CHOICE

Saturday's(14th May,2011) petrol price hike may have thrown most of the Indians in a tizzy, but 8o year old Yashvant Marathe is not worried. Mr Marathe, a  retired Wing Commander has been using the cycle to get around Pune  for the last 15 years. His monthly transportation expenditure Rs 20.
The people will have to spend Rs 5 extra per liter of patrol but since Mr Marathe using a bicycle, it does not affect him.
The Vishrathwadi resident after retiring from defence service, he went in to a business and opened his own shop. While prizes of other commodities are rising, Marathe is happy ,that he could save money on travelling expenses because of his habit of cycling.
Marathe is a member of the Pune Cycle Pratishthan and has also participated in national cucle rallis. Even  when he is in the pune city,he does around 30 kms of cycling every day.
His habit of riding a bicycle has helped Marathe to keep himself physically fit as well.
Advocate Sheela Paralikar and her family own a car, but prefer to use their bicycle to travel around Pune city.Every member of the family has their own bicycle. They do own a car, but prefer to pedal their way around the city. They have been using bicycle as a primary mode of travel for the last 16 years.  Sheela's daughter-in-law works at the National Chemical Labortary and she too prefers a bicycle. Sheela herself cycles almost 25 km every day.
58-year old Aparna has been riding a bicycle for the past 12 years and pointed out that the cycle is a very slow mode of transport which drives people away from using it, especially with people today who are very busy.Every one has to rush to their jobs quickly,so they prefer using a vehicle over a bicycle. But in the US the people who ride bicycles to office are given grace time to get to the office. They can reach office a little later than their actual timings. According Aparna, the morning and evening hours are the best time to cycle. Cycling is one of the best exercises.
