WORLD HERITAGE DAY(APRIL-18)- HISTORY

WORLD HERITAGE DAY-2011(APRIL-18)
History

World Heritage Day 2011: April 18 is World Heritage Day .The role of heritage conservation in achieving sustainability has not been fully recognised nor has heritage needs been integrated into sustainability, says a document prepared by the Getty Conservation Institute early this year. The idea of a day set aside to commemorate the world’s heritage – a day on which to highlight the efforts required to protect and conserve heritage and to underscore its vulnerability – was first mooted by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS). It was adopted by UNESCO in 1983 and ever since, April 18th has been observed as World Heritage Day the world over.
During the British rule, the capital shifted to Kolkata for nearly 200 years, till King George V restored Delhi to its former glory as the capital city in 1911. The city of New Delhi was built in the 1920s. This year, the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) in Bangalore is celebrating the day with a couple of different events. In association with NGMA, we have a set of talks on art and architectural restoration to be held at NGMA on 16th April. On the 17th, INTACH together with Namma Bengaluru Foundation (NBF), has a Heritage Walk at Gavipuram. Also with NBF, watch out for a heritage quiz on FM radio on the 18th. April 18th is world heritage day.

It’s about creating the awareness about protecting and preserving the valuable assets. On 18 April 1982 on the occasion of a symposium organised by ICOMOS in Tunisia, the “International Day for Monuments and Sites” idea was suggested too be celebrated globally. Conservation of India’s millenia old cultural and architectural heritage will be the focus of the third Pupul Jayakar Memorial Lecture organised by the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) here Monday on World Heritage Day. This was approved by the UNESCO General Conference at its 22nd session in November 1983 . 18 April was selected as the “International Monuments and Sites Day”. This has been traditionally called the World Heritage Day.
