WILD LIFE CENSUS

                                                          WILD LIFE CENSUS
  THE CENSUS WILL BE CONDUCTED IN ALL 35 FOREST DIVISIONS OF THE STATE


 Wild life census covering all the forest areas in the state will be begin on May,2011. The latest survey comes after a gap of nine years. It was in 2002 that such a survey was held in the state last. though the tiger and elephant population of the state are estimated regularly, the latest data on  other wild life in the Kerala forest are not available.
  While the tiger population estimation of the state was carried out in 2010 and 2006, the elephant population was estimated in 2010. the census will be conducted in 35 forest divisions involving all the divisional forest officers, Agencies such as the world wildlife Fund and the Kerala Forest Research Institute have offered to participate in the exercise.It is estimated that around 2,000 officials and volunteers will have to be involved in the process. According to the information availabele on the website of the Forest Department, the effective forest area in the state is 9,400 sq km and the forest area under the protected area network is 2,760.8134 sq km. The state forest areas are generally classified as ever green, deciduous and shola forests. Grass lands and mangroves too from part of the forest wealth, which houses a large variety of wild animals.
  The Kerala forest is home to a wide variety of wild life including Nilgir tahr, leopards, wild ox, sambhar deer, barking deer, wild boar, bear, malabar giant squirrel and Lion-tailed macaque. The total forest area of the state has to biosphere reserves, six wild life sanctuaries, five national parks, including the Eravikulam and Silent valley national parks, and one community reserve.
