                                      ELEPHANT SERIOUSLY INJURED

An elephant was seriously injured as it was thrown out of a lorry while the vehicle overturned at a sharp curve on National High way no 47 at Nellimukku in the Kolam city around 3.40 pm on Saturday, 16th April,2011.
the tusker went crashing in to a parked mini-lorry, sustaining injuries on the fore-head and trunk. The animal fell on its side. Puthenkulam Ananthapadmanabhan was being brought from Thrissur for Kollam pooram ceremonies, which later started at 5 p.m at Asramam Maidan in the Kollam city.
the Forest Department ordered an investigation in to the accident. Animal rights activists expressed serious concern over growing number of untoward elephant- related incidents during this years festival season. They said the elephants had been transported in violation of the rules.
SPCA (society for prevention for cruelty to Animals) president said that whenever these rules were violated, the animal rights activists bring it to the notice of authorities, But the response had been lax.He wanted the authorities to be more serious on such issues to prevent the exploitation of captive elephants for money making.
