Delhi government to supply free chlorine tablets

       The Delhi government Wednesday decided to offer free chlorine tablets but disputed claims that drug resistance in bacteria causing cholera and other diseases had risen in the city's drinking water. After Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit held a high-level meeting, the government said that experts were unanimous that there was no scientific evidence to back the allegations.
'In view of the summer season when diarrhoeal diseases usually increase, the public is advised to use chlorine tablets in case Delhi Jal Board (DJB) water is not available or alternatively boiled water can be used for drinking purposes,' an official statement said.

     'Arrangements have been made for free supply of chlorine tablets in government dispensaries and hospitals. In addition, the DJB is supplying chlorine tablets free of cost through its outlets.'
Officials of the National Centre for Disease Control, the DJB, the Directorate of Health Services of the Delhi government, the Maulana Azad Medical College and the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) attended the meeting.
