Silkworms can now
Produce coloured silk
Researchers in Singapore have succeeded in making silkworms produce coloured silk, a media report said. Eight scientists from the Agency for Science, Technology and Research - a science promotion agency in Singapore - have been working on a project since 2009, and have now succeeded by mixing the silkworms' diet with mulberry powder and a special coloured substance. This method will allow the textile industry to bypass dyeing of silk in the traditional process; Xinhua reported citing Channel News Asia. The new process saves water and uses less resource than traditional methods, the scientists said.
