Aranmula Ponnamma,national award winning cine artiste died at the age of 96 at a private hospital,Thiruvananthapuram on Monday 21st February,2011. She was at the hospital with ailments connected with old age since February 2 and had undergone a surgery last week.
The national award for the best supporting actress came her way for the role in the Adoor Gopalakrishnanan film Kathapurushan in 1995. The state government honoured her in 2006 with J.C Daniel award for Life time achievement in the films.
Born in an encient family at Aranmula in 1914,her entry in to the world of theater and then film as an actress was accidential. She was working as a music teacher at cotton Hill School. Her first film was Sasidharan released in 1950. Although she was only 36 years of age then, she was cast as a mother of the heroine in the film played by Miss Kumari, a prominent actress of the period. She had acted the role of the Mother for three generations of actors. Suresh Gopi is married to her grand daughter. Her body at the Tagore theator for public topay homage. Hundreds of people came for last glimpse of the actor who had played the role of mother to three generations of actors. Her body was later taken back to her residence in Sasthamangalam for last rites.
The public paid their respects at the Tagore Theater at Vazhuthacaud from 1 pm to 4 pm on Tuesday February, 2011. The cremation was at Santhikavadam at Thycaud in Thiruvananthapuram.
Chief Minister in a condolence message,said the contribution had made to the Malayalam cinema would be remembered for all times to come.
