SAVE THE ASHTAMUDI LAKE( WORLD WETLANDS DAY- FEBRUARY 2 nd)

The district Panchayat ,Kollam on Tuesday,1st February,2011, decided to call a people's convention in February to draft a practical plan for the protection of the Ashtamudi and the Sasthamcotta lakes, which are Ramsar sites.
  World wet lands Day is observed on February 2 to mark the anniversary of the signing of the convention on wet lands at Ramsar in Iran on February2,1971.
      The slogan for this year is" Forests for water and wet lands" was chosen because the United Nation declared 2011 the International year of Forests.
      The Panchayat has decided to hold meetings with various voluntary organizations engaged in campaigns for the protection of the two lakes and the suggestion s which crop up will be included in the draft plans. The meeting for Sasthamcotta lake will be held on February 5 and for the Ashtamudi lake on February 9.
