EXPLOSIONS AT FIREWORKS UNIT




   Eight persons,including a woman were killed and four sustained serious burns in explosions in three sheds of a fireworks-making unit at Thranjali,between Ottappalam and Shornur in the Vaniyamkulam gramapanchayat on Tuesday 1st February,2011.
     Palakkad district collector K.V Mohan Kumar told that the unit did not have license. The Fireworks owner held a Licence till 2008,he continued the business in Thrissur as wee as Palakkad. Cases have been registered against him. The local people and Fire and Rescue service personnel and the police recovered the bodies,some of which were badly disfigured. The injured were rushed to hospitals in Shoranur,Ottappalam and Thrissur. When the accident took place 12 workers were there in the sheds. Ten of their co workers had left early, escaping the tragedy. A train passenger sustaining serious injuries where fireworks burst and  fell   on moving train.

     In the shock and vibration created by the blasts, a number of houses in Shornur, Thranjali and Kavalpara in Plakkad and Cheruthuruthy and Deshemangalam in Thrissur, on either sides of the Bharathapuzha, developed cracks. People with in a 3 km radius were in a state of shock. The workers were making fireworks for festivals in temples in Thrissur and Palakkad.
     The state government has ordered an enquiry and sanctioned Rs 10,000 to the relatives of each of the dead. Chief Minister expressed his condolence over the death of eight persons in the incident. Kerala Governor R.S Gavai has mourned the loss of lives in the tragic accident. He expressed profound grief at the accident and prayed for speedy
