Sand-mining in progress in the Thalamukku Thopparea of Kadhinankulam Lake in Thiruvananthapuram. Few hundread metres in to the lake, there is hectic activity going on, of people busy mining sand from the lake bottom. The sand mafia and their workers do illegal sand mining. 100 lorry loads of sand is being removed from just one locality every day. Earlier, thus used to be night time operation, but no longer, now it is a 24 hour operation.
Mangalpuram grama panchayat has passed several resolutions urging the revenue authorites and the government to initiate action against the sand mafia. the revenue and the police authorities should to act against the sand mafia whose plunder is kiling a lake, its unique ecosystem and the neighbouring land areas little by little.
