TEARFUL TRIBUTE PAID TO MR K.M MATHEW- THE CHIEF EDITOR, MALAYALA MANORAMA


Mr K.M Mathew, Chief Editor of the mass-circulation Malayalam newspaper Malayala Manorama passed away at his residence on Sunday morning ist August,2020. He was 93.
            He had age related ailments, but was active and at work till a few days ago. Born as the eights son of Mr K.C Maman Mappillai and Kunjaadamma on January 2nd, 1917. Mr K.M Mathew started off as a rubber planter in Chickmagalur in Karnataka.
            He later went to Bombay to look after another line of the family business. He joined the family owned Malayala Manorama in 1954 as its General Manager and Managing Editor under his elder brother K.M Cheriyan. Following the death of their father, Maman Mapplia, who was the editor from 1904. Mr Mathew became the chief Editor of the news paper, founded in 1888, on the death of Mr K.M Cheriyan in 1973.
            Under his stewardship Malayala Manorama embarked  on a  new journey of expansion and modernisation. He encouraged young talent, and several professionals were specially trained and oriented to a popular style of journalism that in many ways changed the face of news papers style.
            Mr K.M Mathew was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 1998. He served as the president of the Indian News paper society, chairman of the P4ress  Truest of India, founder trustee and chairman of the press Institute of Indian and Research Institute for News paper Development, Executive Committee member of the Federation of International News paper publishers and Editors based in France and a consultant to the International Press Institute.
            Mr K.M Mathew has written two books, Ettamathe Mothiram( The Eight Ring), an autobiography and Annamma, in Memory of his late wife who made a name for herself with a range of cookery books, Mrs K.M Mathew as she Choose to. be known in public, was the Editor of Vanitha, a Magazin for women, until her death in 2003.They have four children Mamen Mathew, Editor, Philip Mathew, Managing Editor, Jacob Mathew Executive Editor of Malayala Manaorama Thankom Mamen is their daughter.
 K.M Mathew’s body, placed at his house for the near and dear to  pay their last respects. There has been a steady flow of mourners. Leaders from all walks of life reached his house” Roop Kala”. Thousands from all sections of society paid their last respects to the man who touched their life in various ways during his long public life.
            The last journey from home began by 12 noon (Monday 2nd August,2010) When the body was taken to the head quarters of the Malayala Manorama. By 12.30 when the body reached in Manorama Main office.
            The special prayers at Puthen pally(Orthodox church) were lead by Catholicos of the East and head of the Malankara Orthodox church.H.H Basalious Marthoma Didymos I, assisted by Catholicate designate Paulos Mar Milithios and nearly 30 metropolitans. Prominent personalities who participated in the funeral service include leader of the opposition Oommen chandi, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee President Ramesh Chennithala, MLA’s and leader from across the state.
            Among those who paid their last respects to k.M Mathew on Monday include congress general secretary Oscar Fernades, who laid a wreath  on behalf of congress president Sonia Gandhi.Schools in the Kottayam town remained closed in the afternoon on Monday. Kottayam Muncipal authorities had declared a holiday. The Orthodox church had declared a holiday for the all educational institutions under its corporate management on Monday.
            A public condolence meeting was held at Kottayam Thirunkara centre. After the funeral in the evening on Monday. Former chief Minister K. Karunakaran in his condolence message said” Mr K.M Mathew’s death was an irreparable loss to my family. The leader of the opposition, Oommen chandy described ‘Mr K.M Mathew as a Karma yogi” who had devoted his life in the cause of democratic values and freedom of the press.
            Kerala Kavya Kala Sahithy was arranged a condolence meeting at Kottarakara Kurakar Center on Monday, 2nd auguest,2010 at 6 p.m. Prof John Kurakar president, Kavya Kala Sahithy presided over the meeting. Prof Kurakar said” MrK.M Mathew’s demise was great loss to the nation and news paper communication media. He had always been intensely attentive to all issues affecting the people of Kerala”
