M.G RADHAKRISHNAN
Carnatic vocalist and music director M.G Radhakrishnan died on Friday, 1st June,2010. He was 70.
He was born in to a music family in 1940.Mr Radhakrishnan was the son of musician Malabar Gopalan Nair and Harikatha exponent Kamalakshi Amma. He had his college education at S.D.College,Alappuzha,and took ‘Ganabhooshanam from Swati -Tirunal Music Academy. He then joined all India Radio as Music composser.
He made his debut in cinema through Aravindans path-breaking film Thambu. Since then, he had composed songs for number of films including Aaravam, Chamaram, Thakara,Randu –Jenmam,Njan Akananu, Devasuram, Manichithrathazhu, Advaitham,Achaneyanenikkistam,andAnanthabhadram.
The songs in the last two films won him the state award for the best music director. He officiated as executive member of Sangeeta Nataka Akademi and won its award too.
Mr Radhakrishnan is survived by wife,Padmaja, a son and a daughter.
People from different walks of life a tearful homage to veteran Carnatic Music vocalist and composer. The body was taken to the Swati Tirunal Music Academy where students and the talents whom he nurtured gathered to pay last respects to their guru. The body was later taken to the All India Radio and was brought to his residence. Around 4 pm the body was taken to Santhi Kavadam and was cremated with state honours in the presence of a huge crowd comprising ministers, politicians and music buffs. His son Rajakrishnan performed the last rites.
