INDIA AND SRI LANKA TO EXPAND TIES TO DEFENCE,SPACE & ENERGY

India and Sri Lanka on Wednesday 9th June,2010 decided to extend them ties to areas such as defence, space and Energy. The two countries agreed to promote dialogue on security and defence issues and step up high level military exchanges and training of military personnel.

They agreed to institue an annual defence dialogue between the two governments. The two countries would promote the use of space technology for a variety of societal services. Indaia offered to extend bandwidth to set up satellite- interactive terminal in Sri Lanka.

An agreement in conducting a feasibility study for the inter connection of the indian and Sri Lankan electricity grides was also signed. The agreement would makes a significant contribution to enhancing bilateral co operation in the energy sector.

India agreed to assist in the rehabilitation of palaly Air port and Kankesanthurai Harbour as also help in renovating the Duraiappah stadium and constructing a cultural centre in Jaffna.

India announced an expansion of its scholarship programmes in Sri lanka. India, Sri laanka expand ties to defence, spacee ,energy security.

Sri Lankan president Mr Rajapaksa expressed appreciation of India’s assistancee including a grant of Rs 500 crore for humanitarian relief, rehabilitation and re settlement of the internal displaced persons.
