NUMBER OF ATTACKS ON INDIANS IN AUSTRALIA

NUMBER OF ATTACKS ON
INDIANS IN AUSTRALIA

As the number of attacks on Indian's in Australia increases, the insecurity of students there also increases. The governments of both countries should take effective steps to end the attacks. The attack on Jaspreet singh, who was set a fire in Melbourne is shocking. It is the Australian universities that invite students from India to study in their country. It is there fore, their governments duty to ensure that foreign students are safe.
Parents borrow heavily to send their children abroad for studies in the fond hope that their future will be better in material terms. In order to pay off their debts, Indian students work night shifts. Employers prefer them because they agree to work on lesser terms. They become more vulnerable to attacks because they work late hours.
Education, which used to be a thriving industry in Australia, has been affected by the continuing attacks on Indians. Fears about personal safety will soon force students to seek alternative destinations for higher education.
If Australia is racist, why are only Indian student' attacked and not Indian's settled in the country? What about people of Indian origin born and raised there? And why are Srilankans, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis not victims of such attacks? I think the truth is no one is 100 percent safe in Australia. There are many who, under the influence of alcohol and drugs, go about bashing, mugging and even killing randomly
In yet another attack targeting Indian's in Australia, a 28 year old man was beaten up a group of locals on Sydney beach, prompting the police to arrest one of the assailants. The Indian, a permanent resident, was assaulted on the coo gee Beach on Monday 10th January, 2010. The new south police arrested a person in connection with the attack and charged him with assault. A court granted bail to the arrested person with hearing on February 24. The person was living in Australia for the past 11 years and never experienced such a thing before. While the man did not receive any external wound.
Many Indian's have been attacked in the last two years in Australia. The gruesome murder of Nitin Garg and the attack on Jaspreet singh can hardly be taken seriously. Whether the attacks are racially motivated or not si immaterial. That Indian's alone have been victims of violence in recent times and the Australian authorities have not been able to punish any one for any of the attacks betrays its indifferent attitudes.
In the wake of the increasing attacks on Indians, particularly the killing of Nitin Garg and the attack on Jaspreet singh, we should resolve not to go abroad for education or employment. We should strive to make our country more prosperous. India is a huge nation with huge natural and human resources. Each one of us should determine that we will not depend on foreign countries for our daily breed.
