The renowned cardiac surgeon Dr. V.V Bashi said that the high incidence of diabetes among those awaiting coronary artery by pass surgery in India should provide a wake up call to health care provides and policy makers. He said the record saying that the country could became the diabetic capital of the world by 2025. Diabetes is not just own right,but is a major, if not the only, facilitator of cardiac disease in India.
Dr Bashi, who is chairman of the center for Thoracic and cardiovascular, care at MIOT Hospitals in Chennai, said as much as 80 percent of his patients had a diabetic history of varying gestation and intensity.
He said physical activity or exercise helps break down sugar in the muscles itself, not allowing it to enter circulation by helping the heart to pump more oxygen in to the system, it increases cardiovascular fitness and endurance as well.
Dr Bashi has performed over 15,000 CABG surgeries over the last 30 years and his success rate is as high as 99.5 percent. This is among the world's best, given that even in the U.S the success rate hovers around 98 percent.
