GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES TWO WEEKS
FREE RATION *TOTAL LOSS PUT AT 225 CRORE

The Mansoon claimed the lives of 24 persons in the state during the last 24 hours. This has taken the toll to 84 since the beginning of the monsoon on May 29, 2009.
As many as 41,137 persons were affected by the rain during the last 24 hours. Seventy two houses were destroyed and 2,556 damaged. Crops on 7, 105, 02 hectares have been destroyed by the rain so far leading to a loss of Rs 48.64 crore. There were 12,410 people housed in 188 relief camps.
The government on Saturday 18th July 2009 announced two week free ration of rice and other articles to the people residing in the areas affected by floods and landslips. Over 40000 people are in the affected list, according to the Revenue department.
The state government also released Rs 19 crore to the district collectors for relief work. The government estimated the total loss to crop, houses and public properties at nearly Ra 75 crore during the last 24 hours and Rs 190 crore since the beginning of the monsoon
Trains passing through the chalakudy Angamaly section were delayed by two to six hours from Friday midnight due to track damage caused by rain and flooding. Some trains had been rescheduled and some short distance trains cancelled
Several political parties have urged the centre to extend liberal financial assistance to the state to face the monsoon fury that has resulted in loss of many lives and widespread damages to property and agricultural crop. Food and civil supplies Minister has said that the state government will give Rs 1 lakh each as emergency aid to the families of those killed in rain related incidents. The state government had taken steps on a war footing to face the challenge.
Monsoon- related calamities the dead included an 18 month old child in Thrissur and a three year old child in Malappuram. The other deaths were reported from Kannur, Kozhicode, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kasargod and Alappuzha districts.
An official release the state had suffered a total loss of about Rs 225 crore. Heavy rain, floods and land slips affected 10 lakh people during 24 hours ending Sunday 19th July, 2009. Ninety five houses were destroyed and 2,323 damaged. Crops on 1676 hectors of land were damaged. The government proposed to draw up a scheme for rehabilitation of people residing in areas prone to landslips in the state in view of the destruction of several houses in land slips. A project report for that would be submitted to the centre soon for financial assistance. The government has deputed three teams to study the land slips. They will visit the affected areas on Monday 20th July 2009.
Revenu Minister K.P Rajendaran has said the state government will submit to the centre on Tuesday 21st July 2009 a preliminary report detailing Rs 300 crore loss in the recent rain that lashed the state. The state government was considering the setting up of a state disaster response force.
