


Vishu was Celebrated with religious fervour at Lord Ayyappa Temple at Sabarimala on tuesday 14 th April ,2009. Thousands of devetees from different parts of south India thronged the, hillock to witness the 'vishukkani' in the morning. Melsanthi N. Vishnu Namboodiri assisted by other priests arranged the vishukkani with flowers, especially that of cassia fistula( Kanikonna), fresh fruits, vegetables, paddy spikes, Jewels, Ashtamangalyom etc inside the sanctum sanctorum after the 'athazhapuja' on monday 13 th evening. The Temple was opened at 4. am for the vishukkani 'darsan' in an atmosphere charged with devotion and 'Ayyappa saranam' mantra rented the air,
The Sannidhanam has been witnessing heavy rush since monday 13 th April night. Deveotees had to wait for five to seven hours for the darsan on tuesday. Both the Tantri, Kandararu Rajeevaru and Melsanthi gave coins to devetees at the temple sopanam as the vishu kaineettom.
A 58 year old pilgrim from Guntur in Andhra predesh was trampled to death and several others were injured in a stampede like situation in front of the holy steps( pathinettapadi) of the sabarimala temple when vishukkani darsan was on the early hours of tuesday.
The Hindu Aikya vedi attributed the tragedy to criminal negligence of the state government and demanted a judicial investigation. The temple will be closed on April 18 evening, marking the culmination of this years vishu festivel.
