India became a Republic in 1950.India's own system of honouring as introduced in 1954. The highest of these Bharat Ratna and the others were in three categories called padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri. It is a regognition by a grateful nation of the contribution made by these outstanding citizens to the country and the people.
The first person to receive the prime honour of Bharat Ratna was scientist C.V Raman. so far 41 have veen conferred this honour and that includes Rajaji and economist AmartyaSen The latest in the list is Bhimsen Joshi, Classical singer. Tamil Nadu has the distinction of having the highest number of Bharat Ratna awards, eight of themincludes Kamaraj and M.G Ramachandran. Some have got the honours twice M.S Subhalakshmi got the Padma Bhushan in 1954 and the Bharat Ratna in 1998 Some leaders out side India have also been given thistitle. One is Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan and Nelson Mandela. These awards have been given since 1954 for four years from 1977 to 1980 they were not given
