NUMBER OF WOMEN CANDIDATES DOWN IN KERALA- 2009

The number and percentage of the women candidates in the Lok Sabha polls has come down in Kerala. The percentage of women candidates which was close to 10 percent in 1999 dropped to 6.5 percent this time. In 2004, the percentage was 8.5. Numerically, the number of women candidates dropped from 15 in 2004 to 14 in 2009. the main stream political parties had fielded six women in 2004 election (UDF-3, LDF-2 & BJP-1) This time UDF has fielded only one women. While the BJP has fielded two, there is no change in the number of women nominated by the LDF.
