(PTI File Photo)Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel 151st Birth Anniversary: October 31 marks the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Iron Man of India, whose leadership played a defining role in bringing hundreds of princely states together to shape a united nation.Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born in Nadiad, Gujarat, on October 31, 1875. Trained as a barrister, he initially established a legal career before becoming actively involved in India’s freedom movement under the influence of Mahatma GandhiHe served as India's first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister after independence in 1947.He successfully integrated more than 560 princely states into the Indian Union. His organisational abilities and leadership became particularly visible during the Kheda Satyagraha of 1918, when he supported farmers protesting against the collection of land revenue despite crop failure.
He later emerged as a prominent leader during the Bardoli Satyagraha of 1928, a farmers’ movement against increased land revenue. His leadership during the successful agitation earned him the title ‘Sardar’, meaning leader or chiefOver the years, Patel became one of the most influential figures in the Indian National Congress and played an important role in the country’s struggle for independence.
At the time, the country faced a major political and administrative challenge. Apart from territories directly administered by the British, India consisted of more than 560 princely states, whose rulers had to decide their future following the end of British rule. The integration of these states was essential to establishing a politically united and administratively functioning country. As India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, Patel took charge of the crucial task of integrating the princely states. Working with VP Menon and the States Department, he pursued negotiations, diplomacy and administrative measures to secure their accession to the Indian Union. His leadership, combined with the efforts of several other national leaders and administrators, helped lay the foundation for India’s territorial and political integration. The integration process was complex and involved different circumstances across regions. Nevertheless, Patel’s contribution remains central to the story of how modern India took shape.
