World Lion Day is observed on 10 August each year. Founded by Big Cat Rescue, an internationally recognised big cat sanctuary, the day was created to raise global awareness of the urgent conservation challenges facing lions and to mobilise public support for their protection. As one of the most iconic and beloved animals on Earth, the lion has long symbolised strength, courage, and the wild magnificence of Africa, yet its populations have declined dramatically over recent decades. World Lion Day exists to ensure that these extraordinary animals remain a living presence in the wild, not just a memory.World Lion Day is a global conservation awareness event dedicated to lions, focusing on the threats they face, the ecological importance they hold, and the actions individuals, organisations, and governments can take to support their survival. The day draws attention to the twin species of lions that exist in the world: the African lion (Panthera leo), found across sub-Saharan Africa, and the critically endangered Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica), which survives in a single protected population in the Gir Forest of India.

Lions are the only truly social members of the cat family, living in structured groups known as prides. A pride typically consists of related females, their cubs, and a small number of adult males. This social structure makes them unique among the world’s big cats and gives them a particularly prominent role in ecosystem health as apex predators.World Lion Day takes place every year on 10 August. In 2026, the day falls on a Monday. Wildlife organisations, zoos, conservation groups, and individuals around the world use the day to host events, share educational content, and fundraise for lion conservation projects.

The scale of the decline in lion populations is alarming. It is estimated that fewer than 25,000 lions remain in the wild across Africa, a fraction of the population that existed just a few generations ago. African lion numbers have fallen by approximately 43 per cent since 2001. The Asiatic lion population, confined entirely to the Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary in Gujarat, India, comprises only around 700 individuals.The primary threats to lions include habitat loss as their savanna territories are converted to agricultural land, human-wildlife conflict as lions prey on livestock and farmers retaliate, prey depletion as the animals lions hunt are themselves hunted by humans, and trophy hunting in some regions. Climate change is an emerging additional pressure, affecting both the ecosystems lions inhabit and the prey species they depend upon.Raise awareness on social media: Share facts, photographs, and conservation messages using the WorldLionDay to reach wider audiences with accurate information about lion conservation.Visit a zoo or wildlife sanctuary: Many zoos host educational events on World Lion Day and contribute to lion breeding and conservation programmes. World Lion Day was founded by Big Cat Rescue, based in Tampa, Florida, and has been observed on 10 August since 2013. The day was established to complement the conservation work already being undertaken by wildlife organisations globally and to provide a focal point for public engagement with lion conservation issues.The founders were inspired in part by the partnership between wildlife filmmaker and conservationist Dereck Joubert and his wife Beverly Joubert, who partnered with National Geographic in 2009 to launch the Big Cat Initiative, a comprehensive programme dedicated to halting the decline of big cats across Africa. World Lion Day grew out of this broader big cat conservation movement.Since its founding, the day has been observed by zoos, wildlife organisations, schools, and individuals in dozens of countries. It has grown in prominence alongside increasing public awareness of the biodiversity crisis and the specific challenges facing large predators.The lion species, also known as Panthera leo, is one of the largest species on earth. Typically weighing 300 to 550 pounds, the lion can vary from a light buff color to a deep reddish brown color.  Surprisingly, there is also the rare white lion found in the wild. Easily recognized by it's thick mane, the lion is also muscular and has a loud, deafening roar.  Unfortunately, as majestic lions my seem, they are slowly disappearing. A symbol of strength, courage and the wild, lions are an irreplaceable part of our planet’s natural heritage. Today, we celebrate these magnificent creatures while reminding ourselves of the importance of protecting their habitats, supporting conservation efforts and ensuring that their powerful roar continues to echo across the wild for generations to come. As far back as 3 million years ago, lions roamed freely across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East .  Today, loins are live freely in their natural habitat in only two locations, Africa and Asia.  In addition, some lions are bred in captivity.Lions are listed as a vulnerable species according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. Though they are not under the classification of an endangered species, they still face obstacles that endanger their survival.Currently, there are about 30,000 to 100,000 lions left on earth.  In the past few decades, lion populations have decreased almost by half.  Trophy hunting and loss of natural habitat are the primary reasons for the diminishing lion population’

Volunteering at a local zoo that houses lions is a great way to learn more about the care required to protect lions.  Volunteering  or making a donation to a conservation group is another way to show support for the good work organizations do.
