എല്ലാ വർഷവും ജൂലൈ 11-നാണ് ലോക ജനസംഖ്യാ ദിനമായി ആചരിക്കുന്നത്. അതിവേഗം വർദ്ധിച്ചുവരുന്ന ജനസംഖ്യയും അത് ഉയർത്തുന്ന പാരിസ്ഥിതിക-സാമ്പത്തിക വെല്ലുവിളികളെക്കുറിച്ചും ജനങ്ങളിൽ അവബോധം സൃഷ്ടിക്കുക എന്നതാണ് ഈ ദിനാചരണത്തിന്റെ പ്രധാന ലക്ഷ്യം.1987 ജൂലൈ 11-ന് ലോക ജനസംഖ്യ 500 കോടി തികഞ്ഞ ചരിത്രപരമായ ദിവസത്തിന്റെ ഓർമ്മപ്പെടുത്തലായാണ് ഐക്യരാഷ്ട്രസഭ (UN) ഈ ദിനം രൂപകൽപ്പന ചെയ്തത്. തുടർന്ന്, 1989-ൽ ഐക്യരാഷ്ട്ര വികസന പരിപാടിയുടെ (UNDP) ഭരണസമിതിയാണ് ഔദ്യോഗികമായി ലോക ജനസംഖ്യാ ദിനം പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചത്.പ്രധാന ലക്ഷ്യങ്ങൾകുടുംബാസൂത്രണം: ദമ്പതികൾക്ക് സുരക്ഷിതവും ഫലപ്രദവുമായ കുടുംബാസൂത്രണ മാർഗ്ഗങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് അറിവ് നൽകുക.വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം: മികച്ച വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിലൂടെയും തൊഴിൽ പരിശീലനത്തിലൂടെയും യുവജനങ്ങളെ ശാക്തീകരിക്കുക.ആരോഗ്യം: മാതൃ-ശിശു ആരോഗ്യ സംരക്ഷണം, പ്രത്യുത്പാദന അവകാശങ്ങൾ (Reproductive Rights), ലൈംഗികാരോഗ്യം എന്നിവ ഉറപ്പാക്കുക.ലിംഗസമത്വം: സ്ത്രീ-പുരുഷ തുല്യത ഉറപ്പുവരുത്തുകയും സ്ത്രീ ശാക്തീകരണം പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുക.പ്രാധാന്യംലോക ജനസംഖ്യ നിലവിൽ 830 കോടി കവിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു. വിഭവങ്ങളുടെ ദൗർലഭ്യം, ദാരിദ്ര്യം, തൊഴിലില്ലായ്മ, പരിസ്ഥിതി നാശം തുടങ്ങിയ പ്രശ്നങ്ങൾക്ക് ശരിയായ ജനസംഖ്യാ നിയന്ത്രണവും ആസൂത്രണവും മാത്രമാണ് പരിഹാരം. വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം, ആരോഗ്യം, ലിംഗസമത്വം എന്നിവയിൽ ശ്രദ്ധ കേന്ദ്രീകരിക്കുന്നതിലൂടെ മാത്രമേ സുസ്ഥിരമായ വികസനം സാധ്യമാകൂ എന്ന് ഈ ദിനം ഓർമ്മിപ്പിക്കുന്നു

World Population Day has been observed on July 11 every year since 1990.The world population reached 8 billion in 2023, and the IDB projects it will reach 8.2 billion in July 2026, 9 billion by 2039, 10 billion by 2060, and peak at 10.6 billion in 2092 before declining. The United States is among the world’s five most populous countries with an estimated 342,620,143 people as of July 1, 2026. The other four most populous countries are India, China, Indonesia and Pakistan – all in Asia.

July 11 is observed globally as World Population Day, which is dedicated to raising awareness about critical demographic issues.The day emphasizes the importance of family planning, maternal health, gender equality, and sustainable development as the global population continues to rise. This year's World Population Day theme is "Realizing the hopes and aspirations of young people – today and for the future."The theme draws on a new report based on one of the largest global surveys of its kind, capturing the views of more than 108,000 internet-connected young adults aged 18 to 39 across 73 countries. Titled Lives, Choices and Futures: What young people want and what shapes their decisions about relationships and parenthood, the report offers a global snapshot of what young adults today want from relationships, family life and the future — and what they feel is standing in their way.Two-thirds of the global population now live in areas where fertility rates are below 2.1 children per woman—the threshold needed to keep population size stable.
