Deeply saddened by the passing of S. Janaki ji, the Nightingale of South India.For generations of Indians, her voice was the soundtrack of love, devotion, joy and longing. Performing in multiple languages with extraordinary grace, she united people across regions through the universal language of music.Legendary playback singer S Janaki, fondly known as the "Nightingale of South India," died at the age of 88 at Apollo Hospital in Mysuru after suffering age-related health complications.Condolences poured in from political leaders across party lines, who remembered the veteran singer for her unparalleled contribution to Indian music.

Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has expressed deep condolences over the passing of legendary playback singer fondly known as "Gaana Kogile".In a statement, the CM said he was deeply shocked by the news of the demise of the iconic Indian playback singer and multilingual vocalist S Janaki."As long as the Kannada language exists, S Janaki's songs will remain immortal. We grew up listening to Kannada songs in her voice. She infused sweetness into the beauty of Kannada," Shivakumar said.Recalling her contribution, he added, "Janakamma was the embodiment of simplicity. Her unparalleled voice will remain immortal in Karnataka's cultural sphere forever. Though she originally hailed from Andhra Pradesh, her love for Kannada brought her to settle in Mysuru. She has the distinction of singing over 48,000 songs in more than 20 languages. With Janakamma's demise, the great musical melody of the music world has fallen silent."

The CM noted that Janaki was honoured with numerous awards, including the Padma Bhushan, along with state awards from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and other states."I pray to God to give strength to her fans and family members to bear the pain of Janakamma's loss," Shivakumar said in his condolence message.

YSR Congress Party president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy also mourned the veteran singer's demise, describing her as one of Indian music's brightest stars.

എസ്.ജാനകി സംഗീതാസ്വാദകർക്ക് ഒരു പേരായിരുന്നില്ല. ഉള്ളിലോട്ട് അലിഞ്ഞിറങ്ങുന്ന രാഗമധുരിമയായിരുന്നു. ഗായകരുടെ പല തലമുറകൾ വന്നുവെങ്കിലും ഇത്രയും മധുരമായ ഒരു സ്വരം അപൂർവ്വമെന്നേ പറയേണ്ടൂ. വിവിധ ഭാഷകളിൽ പാടിയപ്പോഴും സ്വന്തം ഗായികയായിട്ടാണ് മലയാളികൾ എന്നും ജാനകിയെ കണ്ടത്. എൺപത്തിയെട്ടാം വയസ്സിൽ വിടപറയുമ്പോൾ ഗാനാസ്വാദകർക്ക് ആ വേർപാട് ഉൾക്കൊള്ളാൻ കഴിയാത്തത് സ്വരമാധുര്യത്തിന്റെ മഹിമ കൊണ്ടാണ്. ആന്ധ്രാ പ്രദേശിലെ ഗുണ്ടൂരിലായിരുന്നു ജനനം, പക്ഷെ അവരുടെ പാട്ടുകളിൽ തുളുമ്പി നിന്ന മലയാളിത്തം അനുഭവസാന്ദ്രമായിരുന്നു.kപാട്ടിന്റെ അമ്മ ,1957ൽ പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയ മിന്നുന്നതെല്ലാം പൊന്നല്ല എന്ന ചിത്രത്തിലെ ' ഇരുൾ മൂടുകയോ എൻ വഴിയിൽ 'എന്ന ഗാനം ആലപിച്ചാണ് ഈ അനുഗ്രഹീത ഗായിക മലയാളത്തിൽ അരങ്ങേറ്റം കുറിച്ചത്. എന്നാൽ പാട്ടിന്റെ വരികൾ പോലെ ഇരുൾ നിറഞ്ഞതായി മാറിയില്ല ജാനകിയുടെ ഗാനജീവിതം.എന്നെന്നും ഓർമ്മിക്കാവുന്ന എത്രയെത്ര ഗാനങ്ങളാണ് ആ സ്വര ഭംഗിയാൽ ശ്രദ്ധേയമായത്. മെലഡിയുടെ ചക്രവർത്തിനിയായിരുന്നു ജാനകി. !962 ൽ ' കൊഞ്ചും ശിലങ്കൈ ' എന്ന തമിഴ് ചിത്രത്തിൽ എസ്.എം.സുബ്ബയ്യാനായിഡുവിന്റെ സംഗീതത്തിൽ അവർ ആഭേരി രാഗത്തിൽ ആലപിച്ച ' ശിങ്കാര വേലനെ ദേവാ.. ' എന്ന ഒരൊറ്റ ഗാനം മാത്രം മതി ജാനകിയെ എന്നെന്നും ഓർമ്മിക്കാൻ. കാരുക്കുറിച്ചി അരുണാചലം എന്ന വിഖ്യാത നാഗസ്വര വിദ്വാനാണ് ആ പാട്ടിന് നാഗസ്വരം വായിച്ചത്. സ്വർണ്ണത്തിനു സുഗന്ധം പോലെയായിരുന്നു ജാനകിയുടെ ആലാപനം. ആ പാട്ട് ദക്ഷിണേന്ത്യയിലാകെ തരംഗമായി മാറി.ബാബുരാജ് മുതൽ ഏറെക്കുറെ എല്ലാ സംഗീത സംവിധായകർക്കു വേണ്ടിയും ജാനകി പാടിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. തളിരിട്ട കിനാക്കൾ തൻ താമര മാല വാങ്ങാൻ, അഞ്ജനക്കണ്ണെഴുതി, സൂര്യകാന്തീ സൂര്യകാന്തീ,ഒരു കൊച്ചു സ്വപ്നത്തിൻ,താമരക്കുമ്പിളല്ലോ മമഹൃദയം എന്നീ പാട്ടുകൾ ബാബുരാജിന്റെ ഈണത്തിൽ ജാനകി ആലപിച്ചു. മഞ്ഞണിപ്പൂനിലാവിൽ (കെ.രാഘവൻ),​ഉണരൂ വേഗം നീ (ഉഷാ ഖന്ന),​ നിദ്രതൻ നീരാഴി (ചിദംബരനാഥ്),​ ആ നിമിഷത്തിന്റെ നിർവൃതിയിൽ (എം.എസ്.വിശ്വനാഥൻ),​ മഞ്ഞണിക്കൊമ്പിൽ (ജെറി അമൽദേവ്),​ നാഥാ നീ വരും കാലൊച്ച കേൾക്കുവാൻ (എം.ജി.രാധാകൃഷ്ണൻ),​ സന്ധ്യേ കണ്ണീരിതെന്തേ സന്ധ്യേ (സലിൽ ചൗധരി),​ മൈനാകം കടലിൽ നിന്നുയരുന്നുവോ (ശ്യാം),​ തേനും വയമ്പും (രവീന്ദ്രൻ) തുടങ്ങി നൂറുകണക്കിന് പാട്ടുകൾ അവർ പാടി അനശ്വരമാക്കി. മലയാളികളുടെ മനസിലൂടെ ആ ഗാനങ്ങളെല്ലാം ഇന്നും മുഴങ്ങുന്നു.'ലോകംമുഴുവൻ സുഖം പകരാനായി സ്നേഹദീപമെ മിഴിതുറക്കൂ' എന്ന ജാനകിയുടെ ഗാനം ഇക്കഴിഞ്ഞ കൊവിഡ് കാലത്ത് ഒരു തരംഗം പോലെ ലോകമെമ്പാടും വീണ്ടും വീണ്ടും ആലപിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. എക്കാലത്തേയും മികച്ച ദക്ഷിണേന്ത്യൻ ഗായികമാരായിരുന്ന പി.ലീല, പി.സുശീല എന്നിവർക്കൊപ്പം തന്നെയായിരുന്നു,​ ജാനകിയമ്മയെന്ന് മലയാളികൾ വിശേഷിപ്പിച്ച എസ്.ജാനകിയുടെയും സ്ഥാനം. തമിഴ് ചിത്രമായ പതിനാറ് വയതിനിലെയിൽ ഇളയരാജ ഈണം പകർന്ന സിന്ദൂരപ്പൂവെ എന്ന ഗാനം, കെ.എസ്.സേതുമാധവന്റെ ഓപ്പോളിലെ ഏറ്റുമാന്നൂരമ്പലത്തിൽ, അവളുടെ രാവുകളിലെ രാകേന്ദു കിരണങ്ങൾ എന്നിങ്ങനെ എടുത്തുപറയേണ്ട പാട്ടുകൾക്ക് കണക്കില്ല. ദക്ഷിണേന്ത്യൻ സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലെ മികച്ച ഗായികയ്ക്കുള്ള അവാർഡുകളും ദേശീയ അവാർഡുകളും പലവട്ടം അവരെ തേടിയെത്തി. രാജ്യം പദ്മഭൂഷൺ പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചെങ്കിലും വൈകിയതിനാൽ അവർ നിരസിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. ജാനകി വിട പറയുമ്പോൾ ഒരു വലിയ കാലഘട്ടം മായുകയാണ്. എന്നാൽ അവർ പാടിയ പാട്ടുകൾക്ക് സംഗീതാസ്വാദക ലോകം ഉള്ളിടത്തോളം മരണമില്ല. അനശ്വരയായ ആ ഗായികയ്ക്ക്.
