Auroville, often called the "City of Dawn," is a unique experimental township in South India, conceived as a place where people from all countries can live in peace and progressive harmony, above all creeds, politics, and nationalities. It is recognized as the world's first and only internationally endorsed ongoing experiment in human unity and transformation of consciousness.Auroville was founded on February 28, 1968, by Mirra Alfassa (known as The Mother), a spiritual collaborator of Indian philosopher Sri Aurobindo. The concept was put before UNESCO, which unanimously passed a resolution commending it as a project of importance to the future of humanity. It is located primarily in the Viluppuram district of Tamil Nadu, India, with some parts in the Union Territory of Puducherry (Pondicherry), about 10 km north of the town of Puducherry.The Mother gave Auroville a four-point charter that outlines its vision:

1.    Auroville belongs to nobody in particular. Auroville belongs to humanity as a whole.

2.    To live in Auroville, one must be the willing servitor of the Divine Consciousness.

3.    Auroville will be the place of an unending education, of constant progress, and a youth that never ages.

4.    Auroville wants to be the bridge between the past and the future.

The geographical and spiritual heart of Auroville is the Matrimandir (meaning "Temple of the Mother").

·        It is a striking, golden spherical structure that serves as a focal point for the community.

·        It is not a temple in the religious sense, but a place for concentration and finding one's consciousness, where silence is maintained.

·        The Inner Chamber houses a pure crystal-glass globe, upon which a ray of sunlight is electronically guided to fall. The entire area surrounding it is called the "Peace Area." township is designed for a population of up to 50,000. It currently has a growing population of over 3,300 residents (known as Aurovilians) from more than 60 nations.Auroville emphasizes self-sufficiency, sustainable living, and environmental regeneration. The community successfully transformed a severely eroded plateau into a lush Green Belt through decades of massive reforestation efforts. Residents make a monthly contribution to the community and are given account numbers, often using an internal debit system called the Aurocard instead of traditional paper or coin currency. They engage in diverse activities including organic agriculture, renewable energy, education, arts, and handicrafts. It is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India, governed by the Auroville Foundation.
