MEXICO CITY RAISES GREEN AWARENSES WITH VERTICAL GARDENS

Pollution is one of those problems that plagues the entire world. It has been one of the byproducts of our progress over the last few centuries. We have somehow managed to pollute the very things that are important for the sustenance of life. 
Air, Water and Land have all been affected by human activities, including the millions of species that thrive in them. We have been aware of this issue for a while now and several efforts have been made on local as well as global levels to take the situation under control.



But inspite of all our efforts, we are seeing increased pollution every year, especially in developing countries. It is high time that we get our acts together and reverse the harm that we have caused to mother nature.



A new project planned by Mexico, aims to do just that. The project is being called “via verde” or green way and aims to convert the concrete pillars under the flyovers of the city into vertical gardens.





Under the project, around 60,000 metres of these vertical gardens will be installed which will serve a dual purpose - cleaning the air as well as improving the urban landscape.

According to estimations, these gardens will be able to filter 27,000 tons of harmful gases and create enough oxygen for as much as 25,000 people every year.

Deforestation and lack of greenery have always been the biggest causes of increased pollutions as plants and trees are essentially the filters of the environment. Remove the filters and all you have left is contamination. That is why this project decided to take the way of the green to combat the country’s pollution.



ചൈനയ്ക്കും ഇന്ത്യയ്ക്കുമൊപ്പം അന്തരീക്ഷ മലിനീകരണം ഏറ്റവും തീവ്രതയില്‍ അനുഭവിക്കുന്ന രാജ്യമാണ് മെക്‌സിക്കോ. മലിനീകരണത്തെ നേരിടാന്‍ ഈ മധ്യഅമേരിക്കന്‍ രാജ്യം സ്വീകരിച്ച പദ്ധതികളിലൊന്ന് ഇന്നു ലോകത്തിനു തന്നെ മാതൃകയാണ്. സ്‌കാന്‍ഡിനേവിയന്‍ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലെ ഹരിത പാലങ്ങളെ മാതൃകയാക്കിയൊരുക്കിയ ഹരിത തൂണുകളാണിവ.മെക്‌സിക്കോയുടെ തലസ്ഥാനമായ മെക്‌സിക്കോ നഗരത്തിലെ ഫ്‌ളൈ ഓവറുകളിലെ തൂണുകളാണ് അക്ഷരാര്‍ഥത്തില്‍ പച്ച പുതച്ചു നില്‍ക്കുന്നത്. വെര്‍ട്ടിക്കല്‍ ഗാര്‍ഡനിങ് രീതി ഉപയോഗിച്ചാണ് തൂണുകളെ ഹരിതാഭമാക്കിയത്. വെറുതെ കുറച്ച് വള്ളിച്ചെടികള്‍ തൂണുകളിലേക്കു പടര്‍ത്തി വിടുകയല്ല ഇവിടെ ചെയ്തത്. വായു ശുദ്ധീകരിക്കാന്‍ ഏറ്റവും കെല്‍പ്പുള്ള ചെടികള്‍ നോക്കിയാണ് തൂണുകളില്‍ വച്ചുപിടിപ്പിച്ച് ഉദ്യാനമാക്കി മാറ്റിയത്.

വൃക്ഷങ്ങള്‍ കുറവായ മെക്‌സിക്കോ നഗരത്തിന് ഇപ്പോള്‍ ഫ്‌ളൈ ഓവറുകളിലേയും മെട്രോ, മോണോ റെയിലുകളുടെയും തൂണുകള്‍ മുഴുവന്‍ ഇപ്പോള്‍ മരങ്ങളെപ്പോലെയായി മാറിയിരിക്കുകയാണ്. 2012 ല്‍ നാല്‍പ്പതിനായിരം സ്‌ക്വയര്‍മീറ്റര്‍ പ്രതലത്തിലാണ് ഈ ഉദ്യാനങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നതെങ്കില്‍ ഇന്നത് എട്ടുലക്ഷത്തിലേറെ പ്രദേശത്താണു വ്യപിച്ചു കിടക്കുന്നത്.വെര്‍ഡ് മെക്‌സ് എന്ന പരസ്ഥിതി എന്‍ജിഒ ആണ് ഈ പദ്ധതിക്ക് തുടക്കമിട്ടത്. പദ്ധതി ജനകീയമായതോടെ സര്‍ക്കാരും പദ്ധതിയില്‍ സഹകരിക്കാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി. ഇതോടെ മെക്‌സിക്കോയിലെ ഒട്ടു മിക്ക പ്രദേശത്തെയും തൂണുകള്‍ ഹരിതവത്കരിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. അന്തരീക്ഷത്തിലെ ശുദ്ധവായു വര്‍ധിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ ഈ നീക്കത്തിലൂടെ കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ടെന്നാണു വിലയിരുത്തല്‍.ശ്വസനവായുവില്‍ മാത്രമല്ല മാനസിക ആരോഗ്യത്തിലും ഈ തൂണുകള്‍ നിര്‍ണ്ണായക പങ്കു വഹിക്കുന്നുവെന്ന് നഗരവാസികളും സാക്ഷ്യപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു. മുന്‍പ് നഗരത്തിന് ചാരനിറമായിരുന്നു. ഇതുമാറി പച്ച നിറം തൂണുകളില്‍ നിറയുമ്പോള്‍ മനസ്സിന് വല്ലാത്ത സമാധാനവും സന്തോഷവും തരുന്നുവെന്ന് ഇവര്‍ സാക്ഷ്യപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു.
