GREEN
PROTOCOL TO BE FOLLOWED IN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN KERALA
Bringing of food and
drinking water in stainless steel containers, segregation of garbage into
organic, inorganic and hazardous categories and the setting up of composting
facilities in educational institutions are among the directives issued to
educational institutions and offices in the State as part of implementing a
green protocol in the Education Department.A press note issued here on
Wednesday quoted Education Minister C. Ravindranath as saying that educational
institutions and offices had been asked to compulsorily avoid the use of
plastic items and other disposable items. Facilities should be installed in
schools, colleges, and universities for the segregated disposal of garbage.
Composting facilities should also be set up. The resultant compost can be used
for organic farming.
Inorganic waste,
including paper and plastic, should be neatly stored and handed over to scrap
dealers. Waste paper generated in each class should be neatly stored and
delivered each month to the common collection centre in each institution. As
part of the initiative to avoid disposable items the use of fountain pens needs
to be encouraged, the press note said.In public functions and receptions
organised in educational institutions, the use of paper cups, paper plates,
plastic bottles and plastic covers should be compulsorily avoided.
