AIR POLLUTION IN NEW DELHI GETS DANGEROUSLY HIGH DURING DIWALI CELEBRATIONS

New Delhi’s air pollution hit dangerous levels as India celebrated Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, the country’s Central Pollution Control Board said.Diwali or Deepavali, which marks the Hindu new year and is celebrated with a riot of fireworks and firecrackers across the country, took place Sunday.  PM2.5, tiny particles suspended in the air that can lodge into lungs and cause diseases, jumped to dangerous levels in the Indian capital on Sunday, according to data measured by the board’s air-quality stations in the city.

In some areas, such as the Pitampura suburb of north Delhi, PM2.5 levels increased to 1,238 on Sunday, compared with 435 the same day of the festival a year earlier. The World Health Organization recommends that PM2.5 is kept below 10 as an annual average. It says exposure to average annual concentrations of PM2.5 of 35 or above is associated with a 15% higher long-term mortality risk.New Delhi has an air pollution problem. It is the 11th worst polluted city in the world, with an annual average PM2.5 measurement of 122.  Average air-quality index reading for Delhi in October 2015 was considered “poor” according to the Central Pollution Control Board’s air quality index bulletin.India’s environment ministry said that the burning of solid waste and crops, vehicular emissions and dust from construction sites are major contributors to the city’s smog.

ദല്ഹിയില് ദീപാവലി ആഘോഷങ്ങള് കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോള് വായുമലിനീകരണ തോത് വര്ധിച്ചതായി റിപ്പോര്ട്ട്. 14 മടങ്ങ് മലിനീകരണം ദല്ഹിയില് ഉണ്ടായതായാണ് കണക്ക്. തിങ്കളാഴ്ച രാവിലെ ഏഴിന് ദല്ഹിയിലെ വായു അപകടകരമായ അവസ്ഥയിലാണെന്ന് സെന്ട്രല് പൊലൂഷന് മോണിറ്ററിംഗ് ഏജന്സി അറിയിച്ചിരുന്നു. കാണ്പുര്, ലക്നോ തുടങ്ങിയ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലും വന് വായൂമലിനീകരണ തോതാണ് ദീപാവലി ആഘോഷ മണിക്കൂറുകളില് രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയത്.

ദല്ഹിയുടെ അന്തരീക്ഷത്തില് 1600 ക്യൂബിക് മൈക്രോഗ്രാം മാലിന്യങ്ങളാണ് ഇപ്പോള് തങ്ങി നില്ക്കുന്നത്. ഇത് സാധാരണ തോതിനേക്കാള് 14 മടങ്ങ് കൂടുതലാണ്. ഈ സീസണില് ആദ്യമായി വായുവിന്റെ ഗുണമേന്മ (എയര് ക്വാളിറ്റി ഇന്ഡക്സ്) 2.5 ല് എത്തി. ഇത് ആരോഗ്യമുള്ളവരെപ്പോലും പ്രതികൂലമായി ബാധിക്കുമെന്ന് വിദഗ്ധര് അഭിപ്രായപ്പെട്ടു. ദല്ഹിയില് അന്തരീക്ഷ വായുവിന്റെ ഗുണമേന്മ കൂടുതല് മോശമായതോടെ മുന്നറിയിപ്പുമായി അധികൃതര് നേരത്തെ രംഗത്ത് വന്നിരുന്നു.കാറ്റ് വളരെ കുറവായിരിക്കുന്നതും ചില സമയങ്ങളില് കാറ്റ് തീരെ അടിക്കാതിരിക്കുന്നതുമാണ് മലിനീകരണം വര്ദ്ധിക്കാന് കാരണമായതെന്ന് കാലാവസ്ഥാ നിരീക്ഷണ കേന്ദ്രം വ്യക്തമാക്കി. അതോടൊപ്പം കരിമരുന്ന് പ്രയോഗങ്ങള് കൂടിയതോടെ അന്തരീക്ഷത്തെ ക്രമാതീതമായതിലും കൂടുതല് മലിനമാക്കി.

പ്രായമായവരും കുട്ടികളും ഹൃദയ, ശ്വാസകോശ രോഗങ്ങളുള്ളവരും കഴിയുന്നതും വീടിന് പുറത്തിറങ്ങുന്നത് ഒഴിവാക്കണമെന്ന് കേന്ദ്രസര്ക്കാര് സ്ഥാപനമായ സഫര് അഭ്യര്ത്ഥിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ദീപാവലി ആഘോഷങ്ങളോട് അനുബന്ധിച്ച് പടക്കങ്ങള് പൊട്ടിക്കരുതെന്ന് ദില്ലി നിവാസികളോട് സംസ്ഥാന സര്ക്കാര് അഭ്യര്ത്ഥിച്ചിരുന്നു. ചിലയിടങ്ങളില് അനധികൃതമായി സൂക്ഷിച്ചിരുന്ന പടക്കങ്ങള് അധികൃതര് പിടിച്ചെടുക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്നു.
