Judges in
Telangana took out a rally to Raj Bhavan on Sunday, expressing solidarity with
the agitation launched by Telangana advocates and judicial employees against
the provisional allocation of subordinate judicial officers between Telangana
and Andhra Pradesh states. The judges handed over their resignation letters to
Telangana Judges Association president K Ravinder Reddy, and urged him to
submit the same to the governor, if the authorities concerned failed to recall
the provisional allocation list.
As many
as 120 judges, including district judges, senior civil judges and junior civil
judges participated in the protest. They alleged that the recently released
provisional allocation list of subordinate judicial officers will hamper the
chances of Telangana judges getting elevated to the High Court.Earlier in the
day, several Telangana judges assembled near Gun Park and took out a rally
(silent march) to the Raj Bhavan after paying tributes to the martyrs. The
police who were deployed in large numbers near Khairatabad junction prevented
them from entering Raj Bhavan.A small delegation comprising men and women
judges were allowed to meet the governor to represent their grievances. The
delegation urged governor ESL Narasimhan to ensure justice by directing the
authorities to recall the list.
The
Telangana judges, in their letter to association president K Ravinder Reddy,
stated they have lost hope of justice and support from any corner.“At the same
time, we cannot work under Andhra judicial rulers in future. We being the
judges are forced to keep silent against our consciousness. We are unable to
raise our voice for the future of Telangana. Therefore, with great pain and
heavy heart we have decided to quit judgeship in the interest of Golden
Telangana. We are committed to prevent any injustice to our judiciary. If our
resignations don’t serve as an eye-opener to the authorities concerned, we are
prepared to dedicate our lives by launching a fast unto death,”, they warned. They
stated that though Telangana lawyers and judicial employees had been on strike
for the last 3 weeks, the High Court, instead of solving the issue, is trying
to threaten the protesters.
The HC
released the provisional allocation list of judicial officers of both the
states on May 3. About 130 judicial officers who are natives of AP were
allocated to Telangana by considering their options. The number of district
judges serving in both states stand at 234. Judges need to be allocated in
40:60 ratio with 94 district judges for TS and 140 for AP.High Court allocated
only 84 district judges to AP by keeping 46 vacancies. Besides, it allocated
102 district judges to Telangana in excess of the sanctioned strength of 94
posts.Out of 102 judges, 72 are from AP and only 30 are natives of Telangana. The
judges alleged that the HC purposefully allocated about 20 young direct
district judges of AP to Telangana state who will retire only after 2030.
