As the state's flagship university, the university offers more than 100 undergraduate majors and more than 92 graduate degree programs.Graduate studies include the S.J. The university was established in 1850 as the University of Deseret by the General Assembly of the provisionalState of Deseret making it Utah's oldest institution of higher education. It received its current name in 1892, four years before Utah attained statehood, and moved to its current location in 1900.

The University of Utah’s well-regarded S.J. Quinney College of Law, College of Engineering, College of Education and David Eccles School of Business all offer degree programs for graduate students. The U of U School of Medicine, which is particularly well regarded for its primary care program, is the only medical school in the state. Notable alumni of the University of Utah include Alan Ashton, co-founder of WordPerfect; Nolan Bushnell, founder of both Chuck E. Cheese's and video game company Atari Inc.; and John Warnock, co-founder of Adobe Systems Inc. The student-faculty ratio at University of Utah is 17:1, and the school has 49.5 percent of its classes with fewer than 20 students. The most popular majors at University of Utah include: Communication, General; Psychology, General; Economics, General; Human Development and Family Studies, General; and Kinesiology and Exercise Science.
