കാലിഫോര്‍ണിയ മൃഗശാലയിലെ 150 വയസ്സുള്ള ആമ ഓര്‍മ്മയായി
The Galapagos tortoise known as Speed has been euthanized at an estimated age of more than 150 years.Speed had been living at the San Diego Zoo since 1933. He was brought to California as part of an early effort to preserve the endangered species from the Volcan Cerro Azul Island of the Galapagos Islands, off Ecuador.
The massive tortoise had been in geriatric decline for some time. Keepers treated his arthritis and other maladies with medication, hydrotherapy, physical therapy and acupuncture.Speed was known in his younger years as an alpha male who would butt heads with other males in dominance skirmishes.Thirteen Galapagos tortoises still remain at the zoo. കാലിഫോര്‍ണിയാ സാന്റിയാഗൊ മൃഗശാലയിലെ സന്ദര്‍ശകരുടെ ആകര്‍ഷണകേന്ദ്രമായിരുന്ന സ്വീഡ് എന്ന പേരില്‍ അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന
150 വയസ്സിലധികം വയസ്സുള്ള ആമ ഓര്‍മ്മയായി. 1933 ലാണ് സാന്റിയാഗൊ മൃഗശാലയില്‍ ആമ എത്തിയത്. നൂറ്റി അമ്പതിലധികം വയസ്സാണ് ആമക്ക് കണക്കാക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. ജൂണ്‍ 19നാണ് ആമയുടെ മരണത്തെ കുറിച്ചു മൃഗശാലാധികൃതര്‍ വിവരം പുറത്തുവിട്ടത്.
വാര്‍ദ്ധക്യസഹജമായ രോഗങ്ങളാണ് മരണ കാരണം. ആര്‍ത്രയ്റ്റിസ് രോഗത്തിന് ഹൈഡ്രോതെറാപ്പി, ഫിസിക്കല്‍ തെറാപ്പി എന്നീ ചികിത്സകള്‍ നല്‍കിയിരുന്നുവെങ്കിലും ജീവന്‍ നിലനിര്‍ത്താനായില്ല.
നാലുവര്‍ഷം മുമ്പുവരെ കുട്ടികളുടെ മൃഗശാലയില്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന ആമയുടെ പുറത്ത് കയറി സവാരി നടത്തുവാന്‍ കുട്ടികള്‍ക്ക് അവസരം ലഭിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഈ ആമയെ കൂടാതെ പന്ത്രണ്ടെണ്ണം കൂടി മൃഗശാലയില്‍ ഉണ്ട്. ആമ സാധാരണ മറ്റു മൃഗങ്ങളേക്കാള്‍ കൂടുതല്‍ കാലം ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കും. 178 വയസ്സുവരെ ജീവിച്ച് ഗിന്നസ് വേള്‍ഡ് റിക്കാര്‍ഡില്‍ സ്ഥാനം നേടിയത് സെന്റ് ഹെലീന ഐലന്റില്‍ നിന്നുള്ള ജോനാഥാന്‍ എന്ന ആമയാണ്. പ്രായപൂര്‍ത്തിയായ ആമയുടെ തൂക്കം 250 മുതല്‍ 500 പൗണ്ടു വരെയാണ്.
