BHOOMIKKORU KUDA
Malayala manorama and Forest
Department of Kerala jointly organized a programme called “Bhoomikkoru kuda” to
promote afforestation. In connection with this programme a project called
“Valarunna maram” was initiated. Children were given saplings and they were
asked to prepare an observational report about the growth of the sapling they
had planted. From the 6000 entries received 100 were selected. Among these one
was prepared by Ardra Raj of Class 9 (Presently studying in 10.A) from our
school. This is the English version of the report she prepared.
As you all know June 5 is celebrated as the World Environment
day. We know that on this day we plant trees to protect our earth. In
connection with the program “Bhoomikkoru Kuda”, I got two saplings each of
Mahogany and Guava. I planted it in our courtyard. In my house, my parents are
very supportive. But my parents and my sister all had the same interest and
enthusiasm to plant the tree saplings. I and my father dug the pit, put manure
and planted them. We only used organic manures, because other fertilizers are
harmful for the soil. Each day, with much care, I protected them. Every day,
morning and evening I watered the trees. Occasionally, we loosened the soil for
the air circulation.
Now my two saplings have grown to a height of 200cm. Both have so many leaves
now. When I planted them, they had only three or four leaves, but now they have
54 leaves. When each spring comes on it, like a small child, with excitement
and interest, I used to look on it. The happiness it gives me cannot be
expressed in words. Near the tree saplings, there is a small vegetable farm
also for me. We have tomatoes, chilies, ladies finger, ginger etc. The
butterflies, bees hovering on them are a sight to be seen. Thus my saplings are
growing day by day giving me a great pleasure.I got the knowledge of planting the trees, how to take care of them and all
information related to the tree planting from a class conducted in our school.
So it helped me a lot. With my two saplings, I was able to give two green
umbrellas for the earth.
