CENTENARY CELEBRATION OF THE
NAIR SERVICE SOCIETY
The centenary celebrations of the Nair Service Society and the
137th jayanthi celebrations of founding father Mannathu Padmanabhan will
commence at Perunna on Wednesday,2nd January,2014.The two-day Mannam Jayanthi
celebrations will commence as always with the Nair Prathinidhi Sammelan on the
New Year day. The inhouse programme will be chaired by president P.N.
Narendranathan nair. General secretary G.Sukumaran Nair will make the
introductory speech. The public meeting on January 2 will be inaugurated by
Cardinal Mar George Alancherry. The inauguration of the centenary celebrations
will be by K. Radhakrishnan, chairman of ISRO; Cyriac Thomas, member, National
Commission for Minorities; and T.P. Sreenivasavn, vice-chairman, Kerala State
Higher Education Council; will speak.
The centenary celebrations will kick-start a series of projects
and programmes which include an old age home at Pandalam, de-addiction centre
at Karukachal, new guest house at Guruvayur, an ayurveda hospital at Nilambur,
and mobilisation of a centenary fund. The NSS will also expedite the work on the
hospitals at Perunna and Pandalam, Law College at Kottiyam, in addition to the
maintenance and modernisation of the existing institutions and buildings. The
absence of political leaders, State or national level, had evoked curiosity
among political circles as the NSS had the history of sending subtle political
messages through the highly judicious selection of guests at the two-day
meeting. Not only the presence, the absence of any particular leader or leaders
would also be eagerly observed. However, when asked, general secretary G.
Sukumaran Nair said that nearly 40 per cent of the chief guests at Mannam
Jayanthi were from the Christain community, and as such, there was nothing
extraordinary in the selection of the Cardinal as the guest of honour. His
predecessor Cardinal Antony Padiyara too had graced the occasion earlier, he
said.
