HARMONY OF STATE ASSEMBLY

HARMONY OF STATE ASSEMBLY
On Monday,30th December,2013, the walls of the legislative Assembly will, for a change, reverberate to the lilting strains of yesteryear classics. On the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the Assembly, Symphony Television will present ‘Harmony of assembly,’ a musical tribute of 16 songs, all of them handpicked by the legislators themselves.Speaking to The Hindu during a rehearsal session of the programme on Sunday afternoon, V. Krishnakumar, CEO of Symphony Television who conceived the programme, said its title ‘Harmony of assembly’ signified what it hoped to achieve.“When Speaker G. Karthikeyan contacted me a few days ago and asked me to present a musical show, I pondered over the kind of show it should be. There is no point in organising a normal ganamela here. That is when I struck upon the idea of ‘Harmony of assembly,’ a programme in which the legislators sit together and enjoy their favourite songs,” Mr. Krishnakumar said.
He asked the Speaker to randomly select 16 legislators representing all the parties. They were asked to list their favourite songs. The Symphony team would render these songs at the show.“Most of them selected very old songs. For example, the Speaker selected ‘Prabhathagopuram vaathil thurannu’ from ‘Thulabharam,’ a song that most of my team of singers had not heard before. But two of them went in for new songs. P.J. Joseph selected ‘Mazha kondu maathram’ from Spirit and Mathew T. Thomas opted for ‘Kaatte Kaatte’ from Celluloid ,” he said.Governor Nikhil Kumar was also asked to select his favourite song. He opted for ‘Saare Jahaan Se Achha,’ considering the ‘occasion.’ The only other non-Malayalam song in the set is a medley of songs by Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh, and Kishore Kumar, to be rendered by Mohammed Aslam. The other singers are Kallara Gopan, Star Singer fame Vivekanandan, Gandharva Sangeetham winner Devika, Aparna ONV, Akhila, and Kalabhavan Sabu.Preceding each song will be a short video clip of the legislator who selected the particular song. The two-hour show will be staged at the Members’ Lounge inside the Assembly at 2 p.m.
