DR. AYYAPPA PANICKER WAS
A
CULTURAL AMBASSADOR
The two-day national Kavyotsavam organised by the Ayyappa
Panicker Foundation concluded on Sunday,23rd November,2013. concluding
day started with a talk by literary critic V. Rajakrishnan on ‘Modern
sensibility and Ayyappa Panicker’ in which he tried to analyse the contribution
of Panicker to modern Malayalam poetry and literature in general. Panicker’s
pan-Indian outlook and his vast exposure made him a cultural ambassador. But it
was difficult to come to a conclusion on what constituted the quintessential
Ayyappa Panicker because of his protean nature. “As a person and poet, he was
elusive and his protean nature of poetic identity kept him apart from other
Malayalam poets. He resisted being pigeonholed till his last, and as a poet his
concerns kept changing,” Mr Rajakrishnan said.
Though Panicker did not subscribe to any political ideology,
there was an element of humanism in his works. He had his own way of dealing
with contemporary issues but that was in a far-less strident manner. His
intervention, Mr. Rajakrishnan said, was more by implication and through play
of humour and levity.Yet another hallmark of Panicker, he said, was his eternal
quest to acquire knowledge and that probably set him apart as a good teacher
and critic.
