TRIBUTE PAID TO MANNA DEY, INDIA'S LEGENDARY PLAYBACK SINGER

മാനസ മൈനേ വരൂ എന്ന ഒരൊറ്റ ഗാനം കൊണ്ട് മലയാളിയുടെ മനസ്സില്‍ ചിരപ്രതിഷ്ഠ നേടിയ പ്രശസ്ത പിന്നണി ഗായകന്‍ 

India's legendary playback singer Manna Dey passed away early Thursday,24^th October,2013, after a prolonged illness at a private hospital here. He was 94."Mannada breathed his last around 4 am after his condition suddenly deteriorated in the wee hours though he was on a ventilator in the intensive care unit," Narayana Hospital spokesman K.S.Vasuki said.News of Dey's passing away shocked thousands of his fans, especially the music industry and the million-strong Bengali community in this tech hub. The multi-lingual singer, who has been ailing for four months, leaves behind two daughters - Rama and Sumita. His wife, Sulochana Kumaran passed away here in January 2012.

"Dey's body will be kept at Ravindra Kalkshetra in the city centre from 10am to 12noon for the public to pay their last respects and homage," a family friend said.The family plans to perform Dey's last rites at Hebbal crematorium in northwest of the city by Thursday evening.Born as Prabodh Chandra Dey to Purna Chandra and Mahamaya Dey on 1 May 1919 , he has to his credit about 4000 recorded songs in an illustrious career spanning seven decades since 1943. His songs range from romantic numbers to classical to fun songs. His golden period as a playback singer is believed to be between 1953 and 1976 after making his debut as a playback singer in the film 'Tamanna' in 1942

Even after moving away from the Hindi film industry, he continued to be a music icon in Bengal and was active with film and non-film recordings. Bengalis are passionate about his songs and remember him for his soulful music that often reflected the vibrance of Bengali culture and  Kolkatha.  He has sung around 1262 songs in Bengali and has recorded 611 songs in Bengali films and sung 356 Bengali non-film songs. He has also sung 46 Rabindra Sangeet Songs in Bengali, 3 Dwigendra Geet, 84 Shayam Sangeet, 23 songs in Akashvani,3 title songs for Bengali TV serials, 103 Bengali songs from non-released Bengali films and 33 Bengali songs of other varieties.Dey was also honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the country's highest award in the film world, in 2007. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee honoured him on May 1 with Bengal's Vishesh Maha Sangeet Samman award in recognition of his yeomen service to the world of music and the film industry for over seven decades. He was also the recipient of several awards, including Padma Shri and Padma Bhusan.

മാനസ മൈനേ വരൂ എന്ന ഒരൊറ്റ ഗാനം കൊണ്ട് മലയാളിയുടെ മനസ്സില്‍ ചിരപ്രതിഷ്ഠ നേടിയ പ്രശസ്ത പിന്നണി ഗായകന്‍ മന്നാഡെ (94) അന്തരിച്ചു. ശ്വാസകോശ അണുബാധയെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് ഏറെനാളായി ചികിത്സയിലായിരുന്നു.ഏഴു പതിറ്റാണ്ടിലേറെക്കാലം സ്വാന്തമായ ആലാപനശൈലി കൊണ്ട് പിന്നണിഗാന രംഗത്ത് സജീവമായി നിലകൊണ്ട മന്നാഡെ എന്ന പ്രഭോത് ചന്ദ്ര ഡെ മലയാളത്തിന് പുറമെ ഹിന്ദി, ബംഗാളി, ഗുജറാത്തി, മറാഠി, കന്നഡ, ആസാമീസ് തുടങ്ങിയ ഒട്ടുമിക്ക ഭാഷകളിലും പാടിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ചെമ്മീനിലെ മാനസ മൈനേ വരൂവിന് പുറമെ പി.ജയചന്ദ്രനൊപ്പം നെല്ലിലെ ചെമ്പാ ചെമ്പാ എന്നൊരു ഗാനം കൂടി പാടിയിട്ടുണ്ട് മന്നാഡെ.

1919ല്‍ ബംഗാളില്‍ ജനിച്ച മന്നാഡെ 1942ല്‍ തമന്ന എന്ന ചിത്രത്തില്‍ പാടിക്കൊണ്ടാണ് പിന്നണിഗാനരംഗത്തേയ്ക്ക് കടന്നുവന്നത്. അച്ഛന്‍ പൂര്‍ണചന്ദ്ര ഡെക്ക് മകനെ ബാരിസ്റ്ററാക്കാനായിരുന്നു മോഹം. പക്ഷേ, അമ്മാവന്‍ കെ.സി. ഡെയില്‍ നിന്നു സംഗീതം അഭ്യസിച്ച പ്രബോധ് ചന്ദ്രയ്ക്ക് പ്രണയം പാട്ടുകളോടായിരുന്നു. അങ്ങനെ അമ്മാവന്റെയൊപ്പം ചെറുപ്രായത്തില്‍ തന്നെ മുംബൈയ്ക്ക് വണ്ടികയറി. അമ്മാവന്റ സംഗീതസംവിധാന സഹായിയായിട്ടായിരുന്നു തുടക്കം. പിന്നീട് എസ്.ഡി. ബര്‍മന്റെ സഹായിയായി. അതിനുശേഷം മറ്റു പലരുടെയും സഹായിയായശേഷം സ്വതന്ത്ര സംവിധാനച്ചുമതല വഹിച്ചു. ഇതിനിടെ ഉസ്താദ് അമന്‍ അലി ഖാന്റെയും ഉസ്താദ് അബ്ദുള്‍ റഹ്മാന്‍ ഖാന്റെ ശിക്ഷണത്തില്‍ ഹിന്ദുസ്ഥാനിയും അഭ്യസിച്ചു. തമന്നയില്‍ സുരയ്യയ്‌ക്കൊപ്പം ജാഗോ ആയി ആയിരുന്നു ആദ്യഗാനം. 1950ല്‍ പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയ മശാലിലെ ഊപര്‍ ഗഗന്‍ വിശാല്‍ എന്ന എസ്.ഡി. ബര്‍മന്റെ ഗാനമായിരുന്നു ആദ്യ ഹിറ്റ്.

തുടര്‍ന്നുള്ള ഏഴു പതിറ്റാണ്ടു കാലം കൊണ്ട് ഏതാണ്ട് മുവ്വായിരത്തോളം പാടുകള്‍ അദ്ദേഹം പാടി റെക്കോഡ് ചെയ്തു. 1953 മുതല്‍ 76 വരെയാണ് അദ്ദേഹം ഹിന്ദി ഗാനരംഗത്ത് സജീവമായയത്. 1971ല്‍ രാഷ്ട്രം പത്മശ്രീ നല്‍കിയും 2005ല്‍ പത്മഭൂഷനും 2007ല്‍ ചലച്ചിത്രരംഗത്തെ പരമോന്നത പുരസ്‌കാരമായ ദാദാസാഹിബ് ഫാല്‍കെ അവാര്‍ഡും നല്‍കി അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ആദരിച്ചു.1969, 71, വര്‍ഷങ്ങളില്‍ മികച്ച ഗായകനുള്ള ദേശീയ പുരസ്‌കാരം അദ്ദേഹത്തെ തേടിവന്നു. 1969ല്‍ മേരെ ഹുസൂരിലെയും 71ലെ ബംഗാളി ചിത്രമായ നിഷി പദ്മയിലെയും ഹിന്ദിയിലെ മേര നാം ജോക്കറിലെയും ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ക്കുമായിരുന്നു ഈ നേട്ടം. 1972ല്‍ മേര നാം ജോക്കറിലെ ഗാനത്തിന് ഫിലിംഫെയറിന്റെ മികച്ച ഗായകനുള്ള പുരസ്‌കാരവും 2011ല്‍ ഫിലിംഫെയറിന്റെ ആജീവനാന്ത സേവനത്തിനുള്ള പുരസകാരവും ലഭിച്ചു. ഇതിന് പുറമെ മധ്യപ്രദേശ് സര്‍ക്കാരിന്റെ ലത മങ്കേഷ്‌കര്‍ പുരസ്‌കാരവും കേരള സര്‍ക്കാരിന്റെ പുരസ്‌കാരവും സ്വരലയയുടെ യേശുദാസ് അവാര്‍ഡും പശ്ചിമ സര്‍ക്കാരിന്റെ ബംഗ വിഭൂഷന്‍ അവാര്‍ഡും അടക്കം നിരവധി പുരസ്‌കാരങ്ങള്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ തേടിയെത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.കണ്ണൂര്‍ സ്വദേശിയായ പരേതയായ സലോചന കുമാരനാണ് ഭാര്യ. മക്കള്‍ : ഷുരോമ, സുമിത. 2012ല്‍ ഭാര്യയുടെ മരണശേഷമാണ് മന്നാഡെ പിന്നണിഗാനരംഗത്തുന നിന്ന് ക്രമേണ പിന്‍വലിഞ്ഞത്. അതിനുശേഷം അമ്പതു വര്‍ഷത്തെ മുംബൈ വാസത്തിന് തിരശ്ശീലയിട്ട് ബാംഗ്ലൂരിലേയ്ക്ക് താമസം മാറ്റി. എന്നിട്ടും സ്‌റ്റേജ് പരിപാടികളില്‍ സജീവമായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം. അവസാനകാലത്തും രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ പല ഭാഗങ്ങളിലും യാത്ര ചെയ്ത് പുതു തലമുറ ഗായകര്‍ക്കൊപ്പം പോലും അദ്ദേഹം പാടി. ജൂണ്‍ എട്ടിനാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ആസ്പത്രിയില്‍ പ്രവേശിപ്പിച്ചത്. ഇന്നു പുലര്‍ച്ചയോടെ അന്ത്യശ്വാസം വലിച്ചു. ഉച്ചയ്ക്ക് ബാംഗ്ലൂരിലാണ് സംസ്‌കാരം.
