KUNDANKULAM’S FIRST UNIT SYNCHRONISED WITH REGIONAL POWER GRID

KUNDANKULAM’S FIRST UNIT
SYNCHRONISED WITH REGIONAL POWER GRID

The Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project’s first reactor was synchronised with the Southern regional electricity grid on Tuesday. File photoThe first 1,000-megawatt (MWe) unit of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project was synchronised with the southern regional electricity grid in the early hours of Tuesday,22nd October,2013.According to official sources in Tirunelveli and Chennai, the synchronisation took place at about 2.45 am and lasted over two hours. To study the behaviour of the ‘integrated systems’ of the reactor, the turbine and the generator following the synchronisation, the process was stopped at 5.15 am.The suspension of generation has been done to enable the authorities to study thoroughly the behaviour of every system involved in the exercise.
“The power will be further raised to 500 MWe, 750 MWe and 1000 MWe in stages. At every stage, various tests are conducted and the technical parameters are verified. Based on the results of the tests at each of the stages and with AERB [Atomic Energy Regulatory Board] clearances, subsequent stages are reached,” said a statement issued by KKNPP Site Director R.S. Sundar on Tuesday. It may take a few more months for the unit to be commissioned, according to a power sector expert.
