KERALA’S LITERACY RATE IS ONE OF THE BEST IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD
Lise
Grande, United Nations Development Programme Resident Representative in India,
has said that Kerala’s achievement in spreading literacy is a model for all
developing nations.Delivering the keynote address at a function held here on
Wednesday to mark the beginning of the ‘Reading Week’ organised by the P.N.
Panicker Foundation, Ms. Grande said Kerala’s literacy rate was one of the best
in the developing world and that many countries were looking up to the State’s
strategies in promoting literacy with utmost interest.
Inaugurating
the event, Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi
Tharoor lauded the role played by the late Panicker in spreading the habit of
reading. Finance Minister K.M. Mani, Information and Public Relations Minister
K.C. Joseph, and Education Minister P.K. Abdu Rabb spoke. Seminars and
discussions are being organised by the foundation in connection with the
‘Reading Week’ observance.
