BIOGAS PLANTS IN ALL AIDED SCHOOLS IN KERALA
Picture for representational purpose only.The agriculture department has devised a mega project aimed at solving garbage problem, by installing biogas plants in government aided schools across the state.This was announced by agriculture minister K.P. Mohanan here on ,18th April,2013Thursday. “The idea is to use the waste from schools and adjoining areas to generate bio-gas and utilize the same for school kitchens. The manure generated as a byproduct from the plant would be utilised for school agriculture programme and the vegetables for mid day meal scheme,’’ he said.

The scheme is aimed at creating awareness among children about the importance of waste disposal and hygienic surroundings besides attracting them to vegetable cultivation. It would also be of help in dealing with the energy problem to a certain extent.Separate schemes have been devised for primary, UP and high school categories. While plants with a capacity of generating one hour bio-gas (Rs 13,000 scheme) will be implemented for primary schools, a two-hour capacity Rs.17,500 scheme for UP schools, and a two-and-half hour capacity Rs 23,500 scheme for the high school category are contemplated.The government plans to spend Rs 25 crore for the scheme. The agriculture minister has also sought help from Montek Singh Alhuwalia to ensure the success of the project.
