KAYAMKULAM
POWER PLANT UNDER THREAT OF CLOSURE
Kayamkulam Thermal plant, a major source of
electricity in Kerala faces closure due to water scarcity. Currently
the plant is functioning with water stored in its reservoir which
would turn empty after three days. The plant had reduced its production to half
level due to water shortage. The
functioning of the plant fell into crisis since February 16, when the salt
level of water in the Achenkovil river, from where water was taken for the
plant operations, started increasing. NTPC requires 80000 kilo litres clean
water for the proper daily functioning of two gas turbines which
produce 350 megawatt electricity.
NTPC General Manager N. V. Subhramanian has warned that the plant would be forced to stop its operations if reservoir turn empty. NTPC authorities said that though the state government had initiated measures to build a bund in the river to prevent invasion of salt water, it is running at a snail's pace
