WASTE DISPOSAL CRISIS WORSENS IN KOCHI CORPORATION

WASTE DISPOSAL CRISIS WORSENS
 IN KOCHI CORPORATION

After a lull, the garbage dumping issue has come back to haunt Kochi residents. The movement of waste to Brahmapuram waste treatment plant has been disrupted for the third consecutive day following the stop memo issued by the Puthencruz panchayat, where the plant is located. As the movement of garbage to Brahmapuram has been stopped completely, the waste produced in the city started getting dumped at all places in the Kochi corporation and have started producing bad odour. Everyday about 200 loads of garbage was sent to the Brahmapuram plant for keeping Kochi corporation a clean city. All this have started changing with the protest raised by the Panchayat. Now the Kochi corporation is at the mercy of the Puthencruz Panchayat council for restarting the movement of waste.

The Panchayat, alarmed by the health concerns of its residents, wants the state government to interfere in this issue and come up with a permanent solution. Kochi corporation is in a predicament as they are unable to pressurize the state government for an early solution. So far they have failed convince the seriousness of the issue to the concerned department minister. The Panchayat authorities are particularly concerned about treatment of plastic waste, which is more hazardous. But corporation authorities explain their helplessness as they can't do anything on their own. In a nutshell, the issue waste management will remain unsolved, resulting in making Kochi a hell.
