PRISONERS FROM COLOMBO
SENT TO POOJAPPURA
Two
Malayalees who were imprisoned in Colombo jail of Sri Lanka have been brought
to Kerala on Wednesday, 27th February, 2013, morning. P Ashraf (55) from
Ponnani Antony Judi (42) from Kochi have reached
Thiruvananthapuram following intervention by Indian Embassy officials.These two
prisoners who have been undergoing life sentence were convicted on charges of
drug abuse. Antony had been in jail for 11 years and Ashraf for13 years. They
have been handed over to Pujappura Central Prison for completing the sentence
given by the Court of Colombo.The other Malayalees imprisoned in Colombo jail
will also be brought to Kerala in coming days for undergoing their remaining
period in jail. Now there are seven Malayalees in Colombo jail in
which the person Sundaram hailing from Alathur in Palakkad district had given
his address in jail records as from Tamil Nadu.
Anattu Kunnathu Alavi (59) from Cheekkod in Kondotty, Naseer Abdul Aziz (41) from Jonakappuram in Kollam district, Husain Mouvel (39) from Kasaragod, Ismayil Kunji Ahammad(52) from Bankara Melankadi Veettil in Manjeshwar are the other malayalees imprisoned in Colombo jail.Police offiicers under the leadership of H Gopakumar (DIG of Police), had gone to Colombo for bringing the prisoners to Kerala.and they will transfer all the other prisoners to Poojappura Prison.In spite of signing an agreement between India and Sri Lanka for the exchange the prisoners of both countries, 33 Indians including three women and seven Malayalees have been in the Colombo prison. The news was brought to the attention of the authorities by Malayala Manorama newspaper on 5th October, 2012.
