Not many publishing houses today can boast of having been
in the business for half a century. Prabhath Book House is one of those
exceptions, having been around for as many as six decades and bringing out over
6,000 titles, several of them read by millions. Beginning this week, the
Thiruvananthapuram-based Prabhath Book House is celebrating its platinum
jubilee in publishing. For Prabhath Book House, publishing has been much more a
political activity than a business. During the 1960s and 70s, it was the byword
for progressive publishing in Kerala, playing a prominent role in the spread of
the Marxist ideology in Kerala. For years, the long red bus sporting the
Prabhath Book House tag was a regular presence across the State.Translation of
the Communist Manifesto , major works of Karl
Marx, Friedrich Engels, and Vladimir Lenin and works of such literary masters
as Maxim Gorky, Anton Chekhov, and Fyodor Dostoevsky reached avid reads across
the State through Prabhath. Prominent among its major titles in Malayalam are
the complete works of K. Damodaran, C. Achutha Menon, and C. Unniraja.Prabhath
is planning to bring out several new titles as part of its efforts to return to
its old glory, Prabhath Book House chairman and managing director C. Divakaran
and general manager T. Chandran said here on Thursday.
