The seat was held by Mr Mukherjee since 2004.Mr. Abhijit Mukherjee, the Congress candidate defeated his nearest rival Muzaffar Hussain of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) by a margin of about 2,500 votes, according to senior officials of the Election Commission. The elections for the Jangipur seat were held on October 12.
“The thin margin ( of victory) is because the elections were held in a difficult political situation. The issues like foreign direct investment as well as rise in essential prices were there. The Bharatiya Janata Party and some other forces tried to split the Congress votes and help the opposition,” Mr. Abhijit Mukherjee told journalists soon after the results were announced. He claimed that the low voter turnout( about 60 percent) was also among the reasons behind the dip in the margin for Congress, which stood at over one lakh votes in 2009 Lok Sabha elections.
