POOPARA TRIBAL COLONY-SOLAR-POWERED ELECRIFICATION

POOPARA TRIBAL COLONY-SOLAR-POWERED ELECRIFICATION
It was a dream come true for the inhabitants of the Poopara tribal colony in the Parambikulam Tiger Reserve when a micro-grid-based solar-powered electrification system was inaugurated by P.K. Biju, MP, on Monday,20th August,2012.The colony, one among the most remote tribal settlements in the State, situated 18 km deep inside the reserve, with no direct road access, has 50 Muduvan tribal families who have been living in the dark for ages, except for the remnants of an old solar project.
That was until Mr. Biju took on the mission to light up the colony. With no possibility of getting electricity from the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board or the Kerala State Electricity Board owing to the forbidding terrain and dense forests, an off-grid power supply system was the only option. While options such as solar home-lighting systems or solar lanterns were available, Mr. Biju decided to adopt a more effective ,  modular, and sustainable system in the form of a micro-grid-based solar-powered electrification system that has been widely adapted globally for rural electrification projects. An amount of Rs.18 lakh was sanctioned from the MP local area development fund for the project. The state-of-the-art project has set a model for similar electrification systems in other rural villages where grid power supply is still a distant dream, Mr. Biju said.
