HIGH COLIFORM LEVEL IN WELLS

HIGH COLIFORM LEVEL IN WELLS
A test of the water quality in over 200 wells of Mylam and Pattazhi grama panchayats in Kollam district has revealed alarmingly high coliform bacteria levels. The test was conducted by the National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers of the Thamarakudi Siva Vilasam Vocational Higher Secondary School. The two-week exercise was conducted with the help of kits supplied by the Communication Capacity Development Unit. The result indicates that groundwater in the panchayats remain completely polluted.
Reclamation of wetlands, paucity of rains, location of septic tanks near wells and low seepage of water into the ground have together triggered the situation, according to the NSS volunteers, who prepared a report in this connection. The test reports have been given to the wells’ owners. The volunteers advised them to boil water from these wells for 15 minutes before drinking it. The test revealed that bottled mineral water too contain coliform bacteria.
