UAE CONSULATE TO BE SET UP IN THIRUVANANTHAPURAM
The decision to
open a second consulate of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the country in
Thiruvananthapuram will cement the relations between the countries, make
attestation of certificates hassle-free, and a relief to over half-a-million
Malayalis working in the UAE.The announcement by Union Minister of State for
External Affairs E. Ahamed in New Delhi on Thursday that a consulate of the UAE
would be opened in Thiruvananthapuram in the next few months will also help in
bringing consulates of other countries to the State capital.
The proposed
consulate was a long-pending demand of Non-Resident Keralites in the UAE,
especially those in Dubai. The rule that stipulates that consulates could be
set up only in the State capitals tilted the tables in favour of
Thiruvananthapuram, though many favoured Kochi. The decision to set up the
consulate was announced by the visiting UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah Bin Zayed
Al-Nahyan in June last,2012.
