T.P
CHANDRASEKHARAN’S MURDER
LEADERS CONDEMNS
K.K. Rema, wife
of the slain Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) leader T.P. Chandrasekharan, has
said that no leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) could escape from
the guilt of the murder of her husband. In an open letter released to the media
here on Saturday, Ms. Rema said that CPI(M) leaders could not get away from the
blame by merely organising rallies. Chandrasekharan would not have been killed
without the knowledge of the CPI(M) leadership. Those who wanted the culprits
to be booked have started threatening the investigation team when the needle of
suspicion turned towards them. The people should know who murdered
Chandrasekharan, she said. She alleged that the CPI(M) leadership had attempted
to kill Chandrasekharan several times with the RMP getting support from the
people.
Finally with
the help of a hit gang they hatched a conspiracy and killed him. Though CPI(M)
leaders have been saying that they had no role in the murder, those nabbed for
the crime are party workers, Ms. Rema said. Now it is confirmed that CPI(M)
leaders from Kannur had been involved in the criminal conspiracy and they had
sheltered the killers. This has made the CPI(M) leadership jittery and they are
now unleashing a propaganda to hoodwink party workers and sympathisers. Their
aim is to torpedo the ongoing investigation, she added.
Congress leader K. Sudhakaran, MP, has said
that the life of N.K. Sunil Kumar alias Kodi Suni, the prime accused in the
murder case of Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) leader T.P. Chandrasekharan,
could be under threat as the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] had
the practice of killing key accused and witnesses in cases involving the party
leadership.Mr. Sudhakaran said that the CPI(M) would not hesitate to kill its
hired killers so that their leaders could escape the clutches of law.He also
charged the CPI (M) with intimidating the Special Investigation Team for
arresting their party functionaries. Mr. Sudhakaran said that CPI (M) Kannur
district secretary P. Jayarajan had a role in the murder case. The Congress
leader also alleged that the CPI(M) State unit secretary Pinarayi Vijayan had
full knowledge of the conspiracy.
No one will be able to influence the probe into the murder of RMP
leader T.P. Chandrasekharan and the investigation is proceeding in the right
direction, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said here on Saturday. He was responding
to questions from mediapersons about the alleged attempt by Union Minister K.
V. Thomas to save a few culprits.“One thing is sure: none will escape the
dragnet of the law. Everybody must cooperate with the police in unveiling the
truth,” he asserted. The probe is proceeding in the right direction and this is
crucial to ensure the rule of law, Mr. Chandy said. Kerala Pradesh Congress
Committee president Ramesh Chennithala on Saturday alleged that the Communist
Party of India (Marxist) was levelling charges against Union Minister of State
for Home Mullapally Ramachandran in order to divert public attention from the
role of its leaders in the T.P. Chandrasekharan murder case.In a statement
here, Mr. Chennithala defended Mr. Ramachandran by stating that the Congress
would resist the attempts of the CPI(M) leadership's attempts to isolate him.
Such attempts to deride the Union Minister were the outcome of the fear to face
an impartial probe and to sabotage the investigation process. The party's role
in the murder was coming out in the open every day. The reactions of several of
the party leaders showed that the CPI(M) was becoming desperate. The people had
already realised the involvement of the party in the case and it could not wriggle
out of its responsibility in such political violence, he said.
Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Prakash
Karat has said the party will not tolerate any party worker found involved in
the murder of Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) leader T.P. Chandrasekharan. Addressing
a function organised at Kallyassery in connection with the eighth death
anniversary of former Chief Minister E.K. Nayanar, Mr. Karat said the CPI(M)
did not subscribe to the idea of killing its opponents.Demanding that there
should be a fair and impartial inquiry into the ‘heinous' murder of the former
CPI(M) leader at Onchiyam, he said if any party worker was found involved in
the killing, the party would take it seriously.“It is an act that will not be
tolerated,” he said adding that firm action would be taken if party workers
were found to have involvement in the killing. In his first reaction to the
murder of Chandrasekharan, which has put the CPI(M) leadership in the State in
the dock in the wake of arrests of party workers in connection with the
investigation into the killing, Mr. Karat said the party would take all
measures to correct aberrations. He said the party condemned the heinous
killing of Chandrasekharan unreservedly. But the Congress and the UDF were
utilising the murder to unleash a vicious campaign to portray the party as a
party of killers, he said. “The manner in which the probe was being carried out
is a glaring example of political vendetta against the CPI(M),” he added.
Union Minister of State for Home Mullappally Ramachandran's
repeated statements that CPI(M) leaders should be held responsible for the
murder amounted to interference in the investigation, Mr. Karat said, adding
that the Congress leadership was out to reap political benefits out of the
murder. He also said there had been concerted efforts to deface the party in
Kannur district. There were efforts to portray a one-sided picture of political
violence in the district, he said, adding that those who cannot isolate and
defeat the CPI(M) politically were attempting to destroy the party by
presenting a distorted picture of the CPI(M).Party cadres in the district had
rebuffed attempts of the Congress and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh to attack
the party, he said adding that the party did not believe in using weapons to
kill its political opponents. “Our greatest weapon is the Marxist ideology,” he
added.Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan on Saturday mounted a scathing
attack on a section of CPI(M) leadership who according to him, was trying to
stonewall the investigation into the murder of Revolutionary Marxist Party
(RMP) leader T.P. Chandrasekharan and made it clear that such tactics would not
be tolerated.According to him, there was a concerted effort to create an
impression that there was division in the investigation team and also to
demoralise individual police officers in the team. “The government cannot allow
any such move from any quarters for intervention in the investigation,” Mr.
Radhakrishnan said. The Home Minister said that all sections of people,
including the victim's wife and those in the LDF wanted the investigation to
bring out the truth. “However, ever since the investigation entered a crucial
phase the ‘Kannur lobby' is trying to intervene in the investigations,”
Mr. Radhakrishnan alleged.“Now, it is nearly two weeks since the offence was
committed. There had been no allegations of division in the investigation team
or allegations against investigating officers till the investigation entered
the crucial phase,” he said. There was an effort to create the impression that
those being booked by the police could be freed through political pressure and
also to create bottlenecks in the investigation, Mr. Radhakrishnan said and
added that both were offences under Indian Penal Code (IPC).
He reiterated the stance that the bail given to one of the
accused on Friday was not under pressure by the agitating CPI(M) activists and
said the accused was called to the police station for questioning. He was later
set free on bail as he was booked under Section 212 of Indian Penal Code, which
was a bailable offence. If the CPI(M) leadership believed that they would be
able to influence the investigation through political arm twisting, they were
mistaken. Such efforts would lead to lawlessness which the government would not
be able to accept, he said.“As Home Minister, I will in no way intervene in the
investigation. But that does not mean some others will be allowed to
intervene,” he said. The Minister defended the professional credentials of the
members of the investigating team and said officers, including ADGP Vinson M.
Paul, Assistant Inspector General of Police Anup Kuruvialla John, and Rural SP
Rajmohan had received accolades from the LDF government. (Ref: Hindu20th
