Mahakavi
"M. P." Appan (1913–2003) was a poet and littérateur of Malayalam .He
was born on 1913 near Jagathi of Thiruvananthapuram district. His parents ware
Madu and Kochappi. His original name was Ponnappan.
He began his career as a school teacher after completing BA honours from the
Kerala University College, Thiruvananthapuram. He had his imprint in the
literary field for over 70 years. He was also a member of the Kerala Sahithya
Academy from 1957 to 1967.He had published 40-odd poetry collections,. Some of
the famous works include.Vellinakshathram, Suvarnodayam, was the first work
published in 1913.Udyanasoonam for which he won the Kerala sahithya Academy

DEC. 10. Poet and litterateur of Malayalam, Mahakavi M. P. Appan
(90), who died on Wednesday, was cremated with full State honours in the
evening. Mr. Appan had been ailing for a week. Hundreds of people, including
prominent persons from socio-cultural spheres and writers attended the
cremation. The Cultural Affairs Minister, G. Karthikeyan, the Information
Minister, M. M. Hassan and the Water Resources Minister, T. M. Jacob, were
present. Mr. Appan, who began his career as a school teacher after completing
BA Honours from the University College here, had his imprint in the literary
field for over seven decades. He was a member of the Kerala Sahithya Academy
for 10 years from 1957. He had published 50-odd poetry collections, including
Vellinakshathram', `Suvarnodayam', `Leela Soudham', `Soundaryadhara',
`Kilikkonchal', `Jeevithasayahnathil' and `Udyanasoonam', for which he won the
Academy award.
